The story behind Redhead Cottage…
👩🏻🦰🏠
There comes a point in life when your kids are grown, and your parents reach an age where being closer to them matters more than anything else. 👵🏻👴🏻
For us, that moment meant leaving sunny Arizona ☀️🌵and returning to hubby’s home-state, Minnesota❄️🍁🐟🚣🚴♀️—a decision that was actually very easy once we weighed what mattered most.
We are deeply grateful to spend this chapter of life with my in-laws, whose family has lived in northern Minnesota for over 100 years.
Selling our home in Arizona meant we needed to purchase another property, and because it would be a rental, we technically could have done that anywhere in the U.S.
We looked at several states—but ultimately, we wanted to keep our dollars in Minnesota and invest in a place we genuinely love. ❤️
We fell in love with the Iron Range and everything it offers, and Chisholm in particular is one of the sweetest small towns you’ll find.
The question became how to own a home here, be close to family, and still make it work with the tax law.
The answer was to buy a home for ourselves…AND rent it as a short-term rental during the times we aren’t there. That approach allows the home to be well cared for while also being shared with others.
We’ve also been intentional about preserving what was already started by the previous owners (also a redhead 👩🏻🦰)—honoring the character of the home and maintaining it thoughtfully so it can be enjoyed for years to come.
We are especially thankful this decision allowed us to spend quality time with my husband’s father before he passed away just two months ago, shortly after his 92nd birthday.
We plan to bring his 93-year-old mother with us one of the next few visits.
Because Redhead Cottage was designed for exactly this purpose: a place for friends, family, and guests to enjoy for a short stay—so they can enjoy the beauty of this incredible state.
If you see us out and about, please say hello. We’re grateful to be a part of this community.
