Eighteen miles south of San Angelo, Texas, nature enthusiasts are welcome to visit the Hummer House located near the banks of the spring-fed South Concho River. While this west Texas oasis is unique for its natural beauty, it is distinguished from other wildlife habitats because of thousands of tiny hummingbird inhabitants. The Hummer House is the summer home to Texas' largest concentration of bre

eding Black-chinned Hummingbirds. Numerous bird species are native to the area and are joined by migrant birds as the seasons change. The largest number of deer are seen during fall, winter and spring. Wild turkeys migrate into the thickets with their young in September and groups number into the hundreds. Breeding season is completed by mid-April with a few remaining to nest in the area. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy this wildlife habitat by staying in one of three cottages. Each cottage offers privacy in the natural setting of live oak and pecan timber.

We had another great morning of hummingbird banding. Great turnout of guests all morning. We had many Black-chinned Hummingbirds despite all the good rain the night before. We appreciate all the banding crew and Mr. Charles Floyd in his informative program to the guests.

Foggy morning and cool temperatures didn't keep the Hummingbirds away nor the many guests this Saturday morning. We had a wonderful time with everyone and many got to see the banding of hummingbirds. Charles Floyd gave a very educational program and we are thankful to everyone who assisted.

Spring migration has given us really good birds passing through this season. This morning soon after sunrise we spotted a Rose-breasted Grosbeak male outside the observation room. Photographer Tim L. Vasquez, several guests, and other local bird photographers were able to also see it. These Grosbeaks aren't expected encounters here as they skip years on us seeing them. We hope we have some more unexpected migration birds to pay us a visit.

We also had Painted Buntings, Lazuli Buntings, Indigo Buntings, Blue Grosbeaks, Summer Tanagers, Lesser Goldfinch, Nashville and McGillivray Warbler, and several other bird species at the water feature and feeders. Great Day!
