NATIONAL DRINK WINE DAY
While February 18 is observed annually as National Drink Wine Day, it would be a shame to celebrate only one day a year. Perhaps this day is just a reminder to drink wine.

Wine does have its benefits after all. Moderate drinkers of wine have lower risks of liver disease, type II diabetes, certain kinds of cancers, heart attack and stroke. It also can reduce the bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase the good (HDL).

NATIONAL BATTERY DAY
Get a charge out of National Battery Day! Observed each year on February 18th, this is a day to appreciate the convenience batteries provide to our everyday lives.

Today we would be hard-pressed to find someone in the United States who doesn’t derive a benefit from a battery. Even those who live “off the grid” have battery operated devices such as a flashlight, radio or watch.

A battery is used to change chemical energy into electricity by bringing the different chemicals together in a specific order. When correctly ordered the electrons will travel from one substance to another creating an electrical current.

While manufacturing of batteries for everyday personal use has only developed in the last 50-60 years, archaeologists have found evidence of a device that may have been used to electroplate gold onto silver, much like a battery would.

In 1936, during the construction of a new railway near Baghdad, a Parthian tomb was found. Archaeologist Wilhelm Konig found a clay jar containing a copper cylinder encasing an iron rod. Konig suggested the find to be approximately 2,000 years old.

In 1748, Benjamin Franklin first coined the term “battery” to describe an array of charged glass plates.

In 1800 French scientist Alessandro Volta layered silver, cloth or paper soaked in salt or acid and zinc into what he called “voltaic piles,” which generated a limited electrical current. He published his work, and we get the word “volt” from his name to describe electric potential.

It was William Cruickshank, an English chemist, who first designed a battery for mass production in 1802.

We can credit chemist John Daniell with developing a way to reduce corrosion when batteries aren’t being used. In 1820 he invented the Daniell Cell, which incorporated mercury, reducing the corrosion.

Gradual improvements were made by various scientists and inventors over time until in 1896 when the National Carbon Company (later known as the Eveready Battery Company) manufactured the first commercially available battery called the Columbia. Two years later, National Carbon Company introduced the first D sized battery for the first flashlight.

The first battery operated watch was produced in 1957 by the Hamilton Watch Company.

Today batteries are available for numerous purposes. In our modern age, portable electricity isn’t something we think about every day because it is so easily accessible. We charge the batteries on our phones by using the batteries in our cars as we travel down the road. We even have portable chargers that can charge our batteries where ever we are.

PRESIDENTS DAY
Presidents Day is a federal holiday which, in the United States, is observed on the third Monday in February.

This day is set aside, by more and more of America’s population, to honor all of the past United States Presidents that have served our country. Two of our nation’s most prominent Presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, are brought to mind as we celebrate this day. Their birth dates, which fall close to this same time, have been honored for decades and always will be.

Presidents Day is celebrated with public ceremonies in Washington, D.C. and throughout the United States.

NATIONAL ALMOND DAY
February 16th is National Almond Day. Whether you are eating them by themselves, using almond milk, pasta, flour, butter, oil or meal, almonds offer a delicious flavor along with many health benefits. Almonds are one of the most heart-healthy foods on the market, packed with vitamin E, magnesium and fiber.

According to a survey of 500 health professionals, almonds may be beneficial to a healthy lifestyle.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, “Scientific evidence suggests, but does not prove that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts, such as almonds, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.”
Recent research from Purdue University suggests that eating almonds can help people feel satisfied for several hours, which can support weight management and counter weight gain.
Eighty percent of the world’s almonds are grown in California.

VALENTINE’S DAY
Valentine’s Day began as St. Valentine’s Day, a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. February 14th, Valentine’s, Day first became associated with romantic love during the High Middle Ages as the tradition of courtly love was then flourishing. During 18th century England, this day evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery and sending Valentine cards.

Tortellini is a signature dish from the Italian region of Bologna, where they claim to have created this stuffed pasta packed with flavor. Ravioli, tortellini, and tortellacci are all part of the same family of stuffed pasta. The most common fillings for tortellini are ham, white meat, and Parmesan cheese.

An organization called The Learned Order of the Tortellini in the city of Bologna has its members wear to the meetings red and gold hats that are shaped like tortellini. NATIONAL PLUM PUDDING DAY
Observed on February 12th, National Plum Pudding Day is a day to learn more about this delicious dessert.

Plum pudding, also know as Christmas pudding, is a steamed or boiled pudding usually served during the holiday season.

In many recipes, plum pudding contains no plums. The reason for this is in the 17th century, plums were referred to as raisins or other fruits.

The name Christmas pudding is first recorded in 1858 in a novel by Anthony Trollope.

Plum pudding is usually made up of nutmeg, raisins, nuts, apples, cinnamon and dates, along with other ingredients. In England, traditionally every person in the home holds onto the wooden spoon together to help stir the batter. While they are stirring, they also have to make a wish! Plum pudding has also been known to be called plum duff.

NATIONAL SHUT-IN VISITATION DAY
Visiting a person who is shut-in can make a positive difference in that person’s life. February 11th observes National Shut-in Visitation Day, and each year on this day, many people across the nation take the time to make a difference.

A shut-in is a person who, due to physical, mental or emotional reasons, is not able to leave his or her home. These conditions can cause a person to feel lonely, isolated, sad and cut off from the rest of the world. Sometimes they do not have family and friends available to visit and spend time with them. They often lack any kind of companionship.

We often take for granted our freedom to be able to go outside each day, go to work, eat lunch at a restaurant, work out at the gym or take a vacation. These are things that people who are shut-in are not able to experience on any day. A visit with them would brighten their day, and we could share our experiences with them.

Another stay with HBO not working. This happened last time I stayed here. Pretty bad !!
I had the privilege of staying at the SpringHill Suites Cincinnati Midtown earlier this week. I was extremely happy with my hotel choice. As a Marriott property you know it’s going to be a good hotel, they just hold themselves to a high standard. But sometimes, there are little things you notice that make your stay so much better. For one, quick and easy check in with a friendly and knowledgeable front desk staff. I had questions, they had answers. That’s always a plus. Chupa Chup suckers when you check in? No idea why but it makes me smile. USA Today newspapers, ripe for the taking. Awesome. Then in the room, I loved the heavy wooden slide doors of the bathroom… really has a modern and comfortable feel. I also like that they separated the toilet area from the shower area, and that both had sinks. So essentially, two people can get ready simultaneously without getting in each other’s business. That’s a detail that almost all hotels don’t consider. Comfortable bed, plenty of towels and super clean. quiet floor. Plenty of convenient parking. Plus just a short drive from the entertainment district, grocery stores, etc. I will definitely stay here again!
Looks like a good spot for lunch!
Let's start this off.. I Am real antsy about hotels. REAL PICKY. Today we went to a wedding. Mind you all we did is check into SpringHill Suites Cincinnati Midtown and left. So now it's 1am..and we are severely tired. My husband touches the bed and says it's wet. He thought it was the cold room temp for a second. Nope. It was URINE! PURE URINE. Also note- I do complain when needed- and the hotel staff DID NOT CARE. They did NOT offer a refund. All they offered was a rollaway bed. Naw! Why can't I sleep with my husband?!? So since you guys don't check with the housekeeping staff you hire.. your residents have to suffer. UNSANITARY! It's also a health violation (of course I know this). A security guard came and replaced the sheets and put a protector over it. But we are NEVER coming back to this hotel.
