Folks, this is a picture of our most requested house dessert: Texas Sheet Cake. We have made hundreds(maybe thousands?) of these moist, wonderful cocoa based delights since we opened in 2011. The woman who shared the original recipe with me so many years ago while I was still in high school(and very much a fixture at her home during my teens), was Cherry Lynne Reif. She died on March 1, 2026 and was buried out at her family cemetery just south of Clayton.
She may not have known that her cake is served and LOVED by so so many people, but I know, and now so do you! Her baking legacy is a testament to her goodness and her genuine love and care for those who were her "family", whether or not they were actually born or married into it.
I let her daughter know that I would be making and bringing a Texas Sheet Cake to the funeral to honor and celebrate her dear mother. So early on 3/4/26, I arrived at the hotel to mix the ingredients. It's an easy, unfussy recipe to make. No sifting needed(except for the glaze). We typically make our cake without pecans, but we liberally sprinkled pecans on top of the warm cocoa/butter glaze because that's the way Cherry Lynne made it.
Perhaps we will update the menu to read: Cherry Lynne's Texas Sheet Cake to give proper acknowledgement to her ongoing impact in this community, and keep that sweet memory alive! We serve it warmed, with or without ice cream. Come on in and get one for yourself and savor the goodness!
