The Adventure Lab recently welcomed more than 125 freshmen from St. Martin de Porres High School for a week of hands-on healthcare career exploration!
Throughout the week, students stepped beyond the traditional classroom to explore healthcare careers using medical equipment and techniques. Activities included CPR and emergency medicine, basic patient intake and clinical skills, and phlebotomy, with each student completing a simulated blood draw using professional medical equipment. Students also worked directly with healthcare professionals volunteering from University Hospitals, who shared their career experiences, introduced students to the wide variety of roles within healthcare, and helped connect the skills students practiced to real-world patient care.
“We want students to do more than hear about a career, we want them to experience it,” said Mike Evano, Director of Great Lakes Adventures. “When a young person can use the equipment, practice the skills and talk directly with someone working in the field, that career suddenly becomes much more real and attainable. That’s what the Adventure Lab is all about.”
By combining hands-on learning with direct access to working professionals, the program gives students an opportunity to discover career pathways, build confidence and begin imagining where their own interests and abilities could take them.
