We have never shared a (prior) guest IG profile before, but she has offered to share her full itinerary to anyone who has ever dreamed of or planning to visit ALL of our State and National parks. We met her and her sister when they stayed here at Chesnut Cottage 2.5 years ago when they hiked/kayak’d Congaree National Park. During this breakfast table conversation, we dissected one of the nation’s most violent and dysfunctional correctional facility.

We learned about the deadliest prison homicide rates in the U.S. (historically 6-10x the national average), chronic understaffing, overcrowding at 170-200%+ capacity in key facilities, and systemic failures documented by DOJ investigations finding constitutional violations. 

We discussed why meaningful rehabilitation often fails: idle time dominates due to staffing shortages, programming is limited, Broader U.S. data shows rearrest rates near 70% over 5 years. Structural barriers—poverty, mental health gaps, weak job pipelines—compound this. Hope exists in targeted reforms (education, reentry initiatives), but current Alabama ops deliver low ROI on turning men into stable contributors.

The statement we heard quite frequently when Ken stepped away from corporate life and we purchased the one and only historic Chesnut Cottage Inn Bed & Breakfast - with ZERO experience in hospitality or running a B&B. What we did have was enough international and domestic travel to know what we like and don’t like. So we figured, we would simply DO the best we CAN, and offer the BEST we HAVE - and hope that everything will eventually fall into place.And in a world where everyone is pushing AI, we choose to maximize human interactions.
