We have been growing Luffa here at The Inn for about 8 years. When I told a farmer Rich I wanted to grow it, I got the usual response; “another fine mess you are getting me into!” 😂.
Luffa grows like cucumbers on steroids! It needs a good support system, as the luffa is filled with a pulpy substance (think okra 🤮) and are very heavy before they dry.
We have a good crop this year. I won’t be picking them until we get a frost and they begin to dry up.
The drying process takes some time. They need to be peeled, cleaned, soaked and the seeds need to be removed (we save the seeds for next year).
We use the luffa for natural shower sponges and add it to our exfoliating soaps 🧼.
Fun Fact: luffa was used as household sponges for washing dishes, etc. 🧽 until WWII when we went to synthetic sponges 😢.
