Every Master Mason remembers his first step.
Not just physically.
Symbolically.
The moment he chose to begin a journey into the unknown.
The moment curiosity became action.
The moment possibility became commitment.
The truth is, every worthwhile thing in life begins the same way.
Not with certainty.
Not with confidence.
Not with guarantees.
With courage.
We often look at experienced Brethren and forget that they too were once nervous candidates.
The Brother who delivers flawless ritual today once stumbled over every line.
The respected mentor was once the new guy trying to figure it all out.
The seasoned traveler who visits Lodges across the country once walked through a Lodge door for the very first time.
None of them started where they are now.
They simply took the first step.
The winding staircase is one of Freemasonry's most beautiful symbols because it reminds us that growth happens gradually.
Step by step.
Lesson by lesson.
Year by year.
No man reaches the top in a single stride.
And no Mason becomes wise in a single evening.
The same is true outside the Lodge.
Want to learn ritual?
Take the first step.
Want to become an officer?
Take the first step.
Want to mentor a younger Brother?
Take the first step.
Want to repair a damaged friendship?
Take the first step.
Want to become the man you know you're capable of being?
Take the first step.
Too many men spend their lives standing at the bottom of the staircase waiting until they feel ready.
But readiness is often discovered in the doing.
Not the waiting.
The pillars stand as a reminder that every great undertaking begins with a choice.
A decision.
A moment of courage.
And while none of us can see the entire staircase ahead, we can always see the next step.
Sometimes that's enough.
Brethren, if there is something you've been putting off, a challenge you've been avoiding, or an opportunity you've been hesitant to embrace...
Take the first step.
The journey is waiting.
