Patrolman Joseph Andrew Edwards
Columbus Division of Police, Ohio

End of Watch Monday, August 28, 1972

Patrolman Joseph Edwards was shot and killed when he was ambushed while responding to a call for help.

Patrolman Edwards and his partner were responding to a domestic violence call. When they arrived at the given address, on Franklin Park, southeast of Nelson Road, they realized it was a fake call. As the patrolmen were driving through the area, the suspect walked around the patrol car to the driver's side and shot Patrolman Edwards with a 12 gauge shotgun, causing Patrolman Edwards to lose control of the vehicle.

The suspect was apprehended in Beaumont, Texas, on January 9, 1973. He was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life. On August 9, 1978, he was released from prison when evidence surfaced that showed the investigation was mishandled. The State of Ohio decided not to retry him.

Patrolman Edwards had been with the Columbus Division of Police for two years. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Officer Fields was involved in a tragic critical incident that resulted in the death of an armed 15-year-old suspect. Following the incident, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) conducted an independent investigation. The matter was presented to a grand jury, which declined to bring criminal charges.

Nearly 500 days later, Officer Fields was unceremoniously fired by the Mayor and Safety Service Director.

We believe this decision was unjust and inconsistent with the facts of the case, Officer Fields' training, and the department's policies and procedures.

Officer Fields did not ask for this fundraiser. The Akron FOP Lodge 7 is organizing this effort because we believe every worker deserves due process, a fair application of labor agreements, and the presumption that disciplinary actions should be based on facts rather than political considerations.

Police Officer Timothy Allen Haley
Columbus Division of Police, Ohio

End of Watch Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Police Officer Timothy Haley died from a brain hemorhage that he suffered while taking part in department training.

Officer Haley was a member of the SWAT team and was engaged in a SWAT physical excursion training exercise when he began to suffer from pain in the head and fell unconscious.

He was taken to the hospital, where it was determined that a blood vessel in his brain had ruptured, and that he was brain dead. Officer Haley remained on life support for five days so that his organs could be donated.

Officer Haley had served with the Columbus Division of Police for 21 years. He is survived by his wife, three children, mother, brother, and sisters.

Police Officer Terry McDowell
Whitehall Police Department, Ohio

End of Watch Friday, August 24, 2001

Police Officer Terry McDowell was shot and killed as he and his partner attempted to serve a traffic citation to a woman at her home for driving without a license.

The woman had driven to the police station earlier in the day to pick her husband up after he had been arrested on a DUI charge. When it was discovered the woman did not have a driver's license, the two officers told her to walk home. Officer McDowell and his partner then went to her home to serve the citation.

While the officers were knocking on the door, the woman's husband fired a .357 caliber handgun through the door without warning, striking Officer McDowell in the chest above his vest. He immediately fired a second time, striking Officer McDowell's partner in the face and eye, seriously wounding him. As Officer McDowell's partner retreated and called for assistance, the suspect stood over Officer McDowell's body and shot him several more times. Backup officers arrived on the scene and shot the suspect in the leg. The suspect then walked to the backyard of his house and committed su***de.

The gun used by the suspect was found to have been stolen from the suspect's neighbor, who had been murdered.

Officer McDowell was a United States Army veteran and had served with the Whitehall Police Department for 12 years. He is survived by his wife, an 8-year-old son, and an 11-month-old daughter.
