First time at the Frio? Here’s what we’d tell you. 🌿💦
We’ve been around the Frio long enough to know there are a few things first-time visitors learn pretty quickly… so we figured we’d save you the trouble. 😂
1. Don’t underestimate the Texas sun. ☀️
When you’re sitting in the Frio’s cool water, it’s easy to forget just how much sun you’re getting. Even on an overcast day, it’s always sunblock o’clock. Reapply, find some shade, and don’t let a day on the river turn into a sunburned vacation.
2. Bring water shoes. 👣
The Frio stays so beautifully clear in part because of its rocky bottom. It’s gorgeous, but those rocks can be slippery and hard on your feet. Bring a good pair of water shoes and your feet will thank you!
3. Give yourself time to explore beyond the river. 🌵
Yes, the Frio is the star of the show… but Concan has so much more to offer. Go hiking, grab some souvenirs at Frio’s Dry Fifty, enjoy live music and margaritas at Hippie Chic’s, catch a concert at House Pasture, or find a fit like no other at Loca On The Frio. There’s plenty to see, eat, shop, and explore when you’re ready to dry off.
4. Pack it in, pack it out. 💛
Free yellow river bags are available at our office, Frio Country Store, the Visitor Center, and plenty of other spots around Concan. Grab one, fill it up, and help us keep the Frio beautiful. We want to enjoy this river for years to come—and so does the wildlife that calls this area home.
5. Pick up your groceries before you get to town. 🛒
You can find some groceries and essentials at places like the Frio Country Store and Concan General Store, but if you need a full grocery run, plan ahead. The closest full grocery stores are about 30 minutes away in either direction, in Leakey or Uvalde. Trust us… you’ll be glad you grabbed everything before you arrive.
6. The Frio is not a loop. 😂
Yes, we really do have to tell people this 5–10 times a year. The Frio is a natural river, not a lazy river at a water park. You will not eventually float back around to where you started. 😂 Know where you’re getting in, know where you’re getting out, and plan accordingly!
7. Don’t plan every moment. Leave time to do nothing. 🤍
One of the best things about Concan is slowing down. Sit by the river. Watch the water. Listen to the birds. Let the kids play. Have a drink on the porch. Take a nap. You don’t have to fill every minute of your vacation to have a great one.
8. And of course… stay close to the river with FRVR. 🏡💦
Whether you’re coming for a weekend on the water, a family getaway, a girls’ trip, or just a few days to unplug, we’d love to be your home base in Concan. With homes throughout the Frio area, you can find the space, location, and amenities that fit your trip—and then spend the rest of your time enjoying everything that brought you here in the first place.
