With lichen adding a splash of color to its perch, a great gray owl sits on an evergreen branch in Yellowstone National Park, silently watching and listening for small rodents on the ground below.

Fun Fact: Our tallest owls have asymmetrical ear openings which enable them to locate their prey by sound alone. To allow for precise directional hearing the left ear opening is higher on their head than the right, making them extremely adept predators. Once their prey is located, they will silently swoop down and grab their prize with their deadly talons.
