Beginning the evening of July 9, a two-mile segment of the Great Allegheny Passage between the Whitaker Flyover (approximately mile marker 136) and the Port Perry Flyover (approximately mile marker 138) will be temporarily closed so that professional geotechnical contractors deployed by the Regional Trail Corporation can perform preventative rock scaling work along a steep hillside underneath Kennywood Park and PA-837 that is susceptible to rockfall, downed trees and landslides. This segment of the GAP will remain closed until August 6. There is no detour.

The Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy has arranged for a licensed shuttle service to provide transportation for GAP travelers (including bicyclists and their bicycles) between the official GAP-branded trail access area in Duquesne and Homestead, starting on the morning of July 10. The service will operate from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, seven days a week, until the rock scaling project is complete. The shuttle fee is $20/person. The shuttle will be first-come, first-served, but may deviate in order to accommodate families traveling together. Shuttle and project details here:

💖Question?
Every year I quit putting blankets on the bed around Memorial Day. But I sleep with a blanket all year round. Should I leave the blankets on the bed or take them off?

💖Did you know one of Somerset County's most famous residents is turning 50?

Jackson, the iconic African elephant who calls the International Conservation Center home, is celebrating his BIG 5-0, and you're invited to the party! 🐘🎉

For years, Jackson has been a part of Somerset County's story. His likeness even stands proudly in the Eat'n Park parking lot right off Exit 110 of the Turnpike, greeting travelers and reminding everyone that one of the world's most incredible animals lives right here in our backyard.

On Saturday, June 13, the International Conservation Center is hosting Jackson's 50th Birthday Bash, complete with live music, food vendors like our very own Chubby Chipmunk, carnival games, educational activities, a foam party, and a birthday cake celebration with Jackson himself. The event runs from 3–8 p.m. and is designed for the whole family.

When people think of Somerset County, they think of our mountains, our history, and our strong sense of community. But we're also home to something truly extraordinary, a world-class conservation center and one very special elephant.

Join us in celebrating a Somerset County legend. Happy 50th Birthday, Jackson! 🐘💚

Thank You Paul Wiegman, for always sharing Great info! If you haven’t biked the GAP, or least a section your missing out. Stepping Stone Farm B & B, is at Mile marker #59, on the GAP.

The official birthday of the Great Allegheny Passage is June 9, 1978.

This is the date the trail was born when the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy purchased the very first 27-mile parcel of railroad property from the Western Maryland Railway.

While its origins trace back to that day in 1978, the trail was completed in stages over several decades.

• 1986: The first 9.5-mile physical section of the trail opened near Ohiopyle State Park.

• 2001: The first 100 miles of a continuous path were celebrated in Confluence, PA when the bridge over the Casselman River it was opened. At that time, the amalgamation of several trails was officially named the Great Allegheny Passage.

• June 15, 2013: The trail was fully completed when the final section into Point State Park in Pittsburgh opened to the public.

Happy Birthday, GAP, and we are all looking forward to many more.

♥️Stay with us & visit Fallingwater.

Few homes in the world are as instantly recognizable as Fallingwater in the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania.

Designed by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, this remarkable house built directly over a waterfall is widely considered an architectural masterpiece. In fact, a 1991 poll by the American Institute of Architects named Fallingwater the “best all-time work of American architecture.”

With accolades like that, it’s no surprise Fallingwater has become one of the most popular destinations in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands. See what it’s like to visit this world-famous home.
