What number surprised you the most?
To me, it is always that this place has literally been around for more than a century.
There is a gravity to that. It weighs on me sometimes, like a responsibility to make this place the best it can be so that, hopefully, it can be around for another century.
As Minnesota continues to lose small, family owned “ma and pop” resorts every year, we’ll be over here working, investing, fixing, improving and putting our best into making sure this place is here for the next generation. Not only for our family, but for yours.
And I think that’s why the word legacy hits differently here.
We’re not doing this for the likes, the shares or the comments. Don’t get me wrong, those feel good.
But there is a difference between attention and legacy. Legacy is something you build knowing you might never see the end result. Like the 500 trees we plant annually that we hope our grandchildren will enjoy!
It started more than a century ago on a raw piece of land and a dream to create a fish camp. That dream was carried forward by the families who came after, and then by Tom’s parents when they committed themselves to this place 36 years ago.
And now, somehow, it’s up to us.
To take care of this place. To make it better where we can. And eventually, to share it to the next generation and hope they understand the weight, and the privilege, of getting to carry it forward. Believe me, they will- they’re already doing some jobs around here and know this place is a lot of work!
Because the goal was never just to build something people want to visit right now.
The goal is to build something their grandchildren will still want to come back to.
