Fish Fact Friday!!
Did you know that Dolly Varden are named after a Victorian fashion trend? Dolly Varden are a diverse species of char native to the Kenai River watershed and many river systems in Alaska. They are known for their brilliant spawning colors, often dark green bodies covered in bright pink or red spots. There is a character named Dolly Varden in Charles Dickens' novel Barnaby Rudge who wears lots of vibrantly patterned dresses. In the 1870s, a "Dolly Varden" dress pattern was popularized, and people realized it looked just like the spots of this beautiful fish!

GUIDE SPOTLIGHT!!📸🎣🦆

Introducing the brilliant Braeden Young! Braeden is from Missouri and has been fishing for as long as he can remember. When Braeden was serving in the Army, he volunteered for an organization that guides fishing trips for veterans out of Sterling and fell in love with Alaska. He joined the Drifters team in 2024. When Braeden isn’t putting clients on to monster trout, scouting the best bank spot, or slicing perfect filets, you can find him at home in St. Louis golfing, hunting, and training his black lab Tate.

GUIDE SPOTLIGHT!💡🐟🌲

Meet the magnificent Matt O'Henley! Matt is from Yreka, California and grew up fishing the on the Pacific ocean and in Californian lakes. He discovered fly fishing in the rivers of Nor Cal and never turned back! This is Matt's second summer working for Drifters and his favorite thing about guiding is the moment when fly fishing starts to click for a client. Outside of chasing after big rainbows, Matt loves hunting and the Grateful Dead.

Happy Fourth of July from the Drifters crew! We had a great first month of our season catching dollies and double rainbows, basking in breathtaking views, and spotting lots of wildlife. Today we are incredibly grateful for the freedom we have to recreate in our wild Alaskan backyard. We can't wait to see what the rest of the summer will bring!

What a beauty! This fish is one of the Kenai River's resident rainbow trout. They spend their whole lives surrounded by glacial blue water on one of the most magical stretches of river in Alaska. Now aren't they lucky?

Happy Father’s Day.

A lot of our guides learned how to fish right alongside the guys in these photos. Thanks to all the fathers, grandfathers, and father figures who passed down a fishing rod, shared a favorite spot, or got us out on the water for the first time.

If you’re thinking about doing something with Dad this summer, we’ve still got a few openings on the Kenai.
