Fish Fact Friday!!
Did you know that Dolly Varden are named after a Victorian fashion trend? Dolly Varden are a diverse species of char native to the Kenai River watershed and many river systems in Alaska. They are known for their brilliant spawning colors, often dark green bodies covered in bright pink or red spots. There is a character named Dolly Varden in Charles Dickens' novel Barnaby Rudge who wears lots of vibrantly patterned dresses. In the 1870s, a "Dolly Varden" dress pattern was popularized, and people realized it looked just like the spots of this beautiful fish!
