Check out the Copper River fog! In this photo, the air temperature is -20 degrees F (- 29 C), much colder than the water, so the river corridor looks like a giant steam bath! Are you ready for an Alaska winter experience? Visit us at www.nps.gov/wrst/planyourvisit/safety.htm

The steam-powered trains with the Copper River Northwestern Railroad were nicknamed "can't run and never will" but they did successfully run the rugged 193-mile stretch over glaciers, rivers and canyons transporting copper ore from Kennecott to Cordova from 1907 - 1938.

Have you ever heard the phrase “termination dust?” This Alaskan expression refers to the first dusting of snowfall in the mountains at the end of summer. Termination dust signifies that winter is on its way, but it often comes weeks before the winter snowfall. Some places get snow at 4,000 ft. (1,219 m) elevation in July or August, but it quickly melts. To be considered 'termination dust' by locals, the snow must last at least a day!

“Go, sit upon the lofty hill,
And turn your eyes around,
Where waving woods and waters wild
Do hymn an autumn sound.
The summer sun is faint on them—
The summer flowers depart—
Sit still— as all transform’d to stone,
Except your musing heart.”
