Please don’t do this. Holes of any size are a bad idea.
They are dangerous because they can and HAVE caved in on kids and adults. The results have been fatal.
People walking at night would be badly injured or worse, and baby sea turtles get caught in them and never make it to the ocean.
Enjoy the beach, but don't dig holes.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
Carry on with your week.
The only thing impressive about this hole? That someone managed to dig it during an extreme heat wave. 🥵
⛔️ But let’s be clear: this beach hole is not safe. ⛔️
Digging in the sand can be fun, but failing to fill in holes before you leave is extremely dangerous:
⚠️ Hazard to people: beachgoers walking or running on the sand, especially at night or during high tide, can fall into deep holes, risking serious injury.
⚠️ Danger to wildlife: sea turtles, particularly hatchlings, can become trapped or disoriented in large holes on their way to or from the ocean.
⚠️ Risk for emergency responders: holes hidden beneath the surface or by the tide can collapse under the weight of rescue vehicles or cause injury to first responders during emergencies.
Please remember:
👉 If you dig it, you must fill it.
✔️ Smooth out the sand completely before you leave.
✔️ Pack it down so it’s safe for all.
This isn’t about shaming, it’s about education and safety. Do your part to help protect the people, animals, and spaces we all love and, remember, leave it better than you found it ✨
Thanks Duck Surf Rescue for their help to fill this in!
