International Dark Sky Week is here!
Throughout the week, we've shared simple yet impactful ways you can help preserve Nags Head’s night skies, protect wildlife, and be a good neighbor, all while keeping our community beautifully lit the right way.
As International Dark Sky Week comes to a close, we want to share our night sky quality readings with you.
Each month, using a special meter, we take readings at several locations that indicate the brightness of the night sky, with higher numbers representing darker, less light-polluted skies. We collect these measurements during the new moon phase because the moon's light isn't present, allowing for accurate assessment of the sky's natural brightness and the impact of artificial light (light pollution).
So, at your next party, you may be able to impress your friends or family with this information. We hope that at the very least, you'll get a conversation about light pollution started.
