Hello to all our guests! We hope you're enjoying your time in Buck Island this summer. For anyone who is scheduled to come down, we were just alerted to a local Loggerhead Sea Turtle nest just south of Buck Island near the Crowne Point development (just a short walk from our beach access at Malama Sunrise)
Here is some information about the Loggerhead nests in the northern beaches:
🐢 SEA TURTLE NESTING SEASON
Let’s Keep Our Beaches Safe for Our Most Ancient Visitors
Loggerhead sea turtles—a threatened and protected species—are actively nesting on the Outer Banks this summer.
📍 Right now, there are 12 active nests in Corolla and Carova, including one just south of Buck Island near Crowne Point and another about 1.5 miles north.
🌊 The northern beaches have been a hot spot this year, with 12 of the 18 active nests found here!
Please keep your distance from the nest if you go down to see it. It will be marked by tape to alert people to not disturb it. The N.E.S.T. volunteers monitor all the nests to protect the new babies and give them the best chance at survival. Scan the QR code in the infographic to find out more about our nesting turtles!
And if you go down on the beach at night near the nest, please use RED light only (there is a setting on your phone for this), so not to disturb the turtles at night. Thanks!
