Hello to all our guests! We hope you're enjoying your time in Buck Island this summer. For anyone who is scheduled to come down, we were just alerted to a local Loggerhead Sea Turtle nest just south of Buck Island near the Crowne Point development (just a short walk from our beach access at Malama Sunrise)

Here is some information about the Loggerhead nests in the northern beaches:

🐢 SEA TURTLE NESTING SEASON
Let’s Keep Our Beaches Safe for Our Most Ancient Visitors

Loggerhead sea turtles—a threatened and protected species—are actively nesting on the Outer Banks this summer.

📍 Right now, there are 12 active nests in Corolla and Carova, including one just south of Buck Island near Crowne Point and another about 1.5 miles north.

🌊 The northern beaches have been a hot spot this year, with 12 of the 18 active nests found here!

Please keep your distance from the nest if you go down to see it. It will be marked by tape to alert people to not disturb it. The N.E.S.T. volunteers monitor all the nests to protect the new babies and give them the best chance at survival. Scan the QR code in the infographic to find out more about our nesting turtles!

And if you go down on the beach at night near the nest, please use RED light only (there is a setting on your phone for this), so not to disturb the turtles at night. Thanks!

Hello to all our summer 2025 guests. We were just alerted by our Buck Island HOA that people have been trying to fish in our local ponds.

We have been asked to share this information, as 1) it is expressly prohibited to fish in our ponds (there are no fish worth fishing in our ponds anyway) and it is prohibited because 2) it is terribly dangerous to our beloved Buck Island turtles that live in our ponds.

Apparently some have been injured recently by this behavior. Please see the post below for more information and where to fish in our area. Thanks for your help in protecting our turtles!

Hello all, we just received this alert from our HOA management company for Buck Island, there is a delay in the community pool opening:

"The pool opening date has been delayed from tomorrow (05.10.2024) due to a cut phone line by a contractor. Per state regulations a commercial pool cannot operate without a working emergency 911 phone. Signature Touch did notify Spectrum as soon as we were made aware that there was an issue with the pool phone. Once we have a better understanding of the repair time, we will provide the community with an update."

Hello again! As posted earlier, we’ve been busy with some large renovations this winter. Updated bathrooms are done, as posted earlier, and our top deck replacement and siding work is also done! Some of the work in progress is below.

We’re hoping that the exterior siding replacement (ocean facing top deck and north side of house) will solve our rusty nail problem that we’ve struggled with for years! That process will continue as budget allows and please bear with us until it is complete.

We hope you enjoy all the new improvements. Sadly we had to remove the built in bench on the top deck as that is now against code, more chairs have been ordered to supplement seating at the outdoor table and should be arriving soon.

Hello to all our past and upcoming guests, and Happy 2024!

We’ve been busy with a few projects this winter, all things that were planned for pre-pandemic and are just now finally completed. Good craftsmen are hard to find “on the banks” but we were lucky to have found an amazing design and build team that were a pleasure to work with, Real Escapes.

Our 2 largest bathrooms have finally been renovated, the top floor master and our mid level Northeast master.

The top floor master now has a soaking tub in place of the whirlpool, and the shower is opened and much more airy. (We removed the steam shower function as it was getting limited use and was a maintenance issue) The original “Broadway” lighting has been replaced with backlit led mirrors that also defog! Finally we added a heated towel bar for towel drying and comfort.

The Mid level NE bath had a very small shower tucked into the toilet area and a small whirlpool. That tub was removed, shower was moved to the tub area and expanded fully (still waiting on the glass to come in!), and the toilet room is just for the toilet 😉. We also removed the double sink for a single sink, since there was no room for anything on the counter top, and also replaced the lighting with a large LED mirror as well.

Still in the works: new exterior siding on the side and top floor facing the ocean, as well as a new top deck and railings, which should be completed by April. Will post photos as soon as we’re done!

We hope you enjoy all the renovations this year!
