📢 PSA: What to Know About Midges in the Outer Banks 🦟 (But not those kind of mosquitoes!)

We’ve recently noticed a rise in midge activity around the OBX. These insects—often called “blind mosquitoes” or “fuzzy bills”—don’t bite or carry disease, but they can be a nuisance due to their large swarms.

Midges are native to aquatic areas like ours and are attracted to light, often gathering around windows, doors, porch lights, and street lamps. While they don’t pose a health threat, they can leave marks on walls, cars, and other surfaces where they rest.

💡 To help reduce their presence:
• Turn off exterior lights at night.
• Close curtains or blinds after dark.
• Know that their lifespan is short—about 24 hours.

They’re simply a part of the coastal ecosystem here in the Outer Banks!

PSA: As this weekend marks the beginning of summer, CMS with our partner North Carolina Sea Grant provides guidance on breaking the "Grip of the Rip!" Know your options! 80% of all surf rescues are related to rip currents.
Options:
1) Relax, rip currents will not pull you under
2) Don't fight the current
3) Escape by swimming parallel to shore (sideways)
4) Float or tread water, the grip will release you
5) Pay attention to RED flags that warn of Rip Currents

Exciting news!!!
N.E.S.T. has just installed signs on the Carova and Swan beaches in Currituck County. The signs encourage drivers to lookout for sea turtles and the volunteers who help protect them. Both are often on the beach at night, so it’s especially important for drivers to be aware.
Thanks to the great team of N.E.S.T. volunteers who made this happen!
