What are you ordering in Salt Lake on the first genuinely cold morning of the year?

Half the reason I keep a list like this is for the afternoons I need somewhere to sit with a laptop for an hour, or somewhere to meet someone that isn't a restaurant.

If the house feels stuffy no matter what you do, you've been solving the wrong problem.

Cleaning takes dust off the surfaces you can reach. The stuffiness isn't on a surface.

Once the windows are shut for the season, your furnace is the only thing moving air in the house, and it moves the same air every time. Carbon dioxide, cooking fumes, whatever comes off your cleaning products. It all stays in here with you until spring, and no amount of wiping counters touches it.

Two things actually change it, and neither one costs you heat.

Run your kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans all the way through when you cook or shower. They vent outside. Most people use them for smoke and steam and nothing else.

Then on the next mild day, crack a couple of windows on opposite sides of the house for five or ten minutes and let the air move through.

Most families end up guessing at what you wanted for the house in the week after a funeral.

Not because you didn't plan. Because a will only answers one question.

The house is the one that causes the most trouble. Every other asset gets divided. A house has to be kept or sold, and somebody has to decide which one.

Say why, too. If one kid gets the house and the others don't, or the split isn't even, tell them the reason while you're still here to give it.

Fall menus are up around Salt Lake City. These are the ones where I'd rather sit down than take the cup with me.

Here's what to order at each, and where to sit while you drink it.

• Honeysuckle Coffee Co. - Get the Brown Sugar Maple Latte in a room that feels like a big living room, not a cafe.
• Canyons Coffee - Try the flight to sample a few fall drinks, then stay a while in a space built for hanging out.
• La Barba Coffee - Order the Pumpkin Spice syrup in your drink, then settle into the relaxed downtown room built for sitting a while.

If you haven't looked at your deed since closing day, this one is for you.

There's a reason the house feels different once the windows have been shut a while, and it isn't the temperature.

The part I didn't get to in the video is the number on the filter.

MERV 8 to 13 is the range you want. That catches pollen, dander and dust without making your system work against it. Higher isn't better here, which is the part most people get backwards standing in the aisle.

Once the heat is running regularly, swap it every one to three months. Pets or allergies in the house, check it monthly instead.
