Did you know? 😮 The 1980 Mt St Helens blast and 5.1 magnitude earthquake just prior dropped the summit elevation to 8,363 feet from 9,677 feet? That's a loss of 1,314 feet! This was due to the collapse of the crater walls. This image depicts Mt St Helens before the eruption (above) and the height difference to today's Mt St Helens (below).

😮 Did you know that on Mother's Day, May 14, 2023, a Mt St Helens landslide destroyed highway SR 504 and the Spirit Lake Outlet Bridge? More than 300,000 cubic yards of mud, rocks, and snowmelt took out the highway, severing our connection with Mt St Helens.

A temporary road was built, but the terrain proved too challenging. Erosion and snow and ice began eating away at the temporary road as well. But there's good news!

Construction on the new and improved SR 504 is set to complete in Spring 2027. Drivers will be able to drive the entire highway and arrive at the Johnston Ridge Observatory to learn more about the devastation of the 1980 blast.
