From Dirt to Yurt: What's a Twenty Sided Figure?

I've been told that after a foundation comes a floor and walls! I don't recall a lot of details from this phase of construction so it must have been a pretty straight forward process. The main room of the yurt is an Icosagon. The first 20 walls came made; it was our job to be sure the floor was correct so panels fit--AND THEY DID!! More details about what's happening in each photo are in the picture caption. We do owe a huge shout out to Joe and Shelby Frey for helping put the walls up. I do remember Joe Frey gave Holly πŸ‘πŸ‘ for her fork lift skills!

From Dirt to Yurt: Foundation Saga

Yurt progress was cruising along and we were hopefully to break ground in September 2020. A few logistical learning curves and in November 2020 we were making progress on the foundation.

Since we wanted the yurt to have a grand impression by being elevated, we decided to put a full basement in for storage, laundry, and other utility use.

Isaac's research determined using ICF for the foundation would be a good fit. We spent a week or more creating an efficient process to cut correct angles of the ICFs. **Side note, this yurt is an Icosagon (20 sides), meaning there are no 90Β° angles....anywhere!**

I'm fairly certain we had a few celebratory drinks when the last ICF piece went in and everything was snug as a bug!

From Dirt to Yurt: History of how the yurt came to be

The easy description of how the yurt idea was born is "COVID project". Spring and Summer 2020 definitely gave us the time to really plan and not just dream about building a yurt, but Isaac had been thinking about building a yurt pre COVID.

A traditional yurt is cloth, not wood--maybe that's where our search started. We also searched to see how many yurts existed in Indiana--not a lot.
We finally decided on a wooden πŸ›–, as it's a permanent structure and the Queen decided it sounded way cooler than a cloth yurt.

Looking for a place to enjoy the changing leaves? The πŸ›– had a cancellation for Oct. 16-20. We'd love to have you visit! πŸ‚πŸπŸ‚πŸ
