DYK that a turtle’s shell isn’t just its portable home?
Shells are actually living parts of a turtle’s body.

Painting a turtle’s shell can affect its vitamin levels, stunt its growth, and sometimes even poison the turtle. Covering their natural shells in bright colors can also make them stick out instead of camouflaging in their habitats. The best way to enjoy a turtle encounter is to leave them where you found them and enjoy their naturally beautiful canvases from afar. In Florida, it is also illegal to paint any species of turtle or tortoise.

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park began as the winter retreat of Owen D. Young and designer Louise Powis Clark, who received the land in 1936 and shaped it into a peaceful riverfront estate.

By 1938, their home was surrounded by carefully planned gardens featuring a wide variety of native plants. The property’s namesake, the centuries‑old Washington Oak, became the centerpiece of the landscape.

After Young’s death in 1962, Louise donated the estate to the State of Florida. Today, the park remains a reflection of their vision and care.
