🌄 This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Shelter Cove Resort & Marina honors the Indigenous peoples whose history and enduring connections to Odell Lake and the Cascade Mountains reach back thousands of years.
Long before our cabins, marina, and lakeside community, Indigenous peoples lived in and traveled throughout this region, building deep relationships with the land, its waters, and its seasonal resources.
Archaeological research documented by the Oregon History Project places human activity in the Cascade uplands surrounding Odell Lake as far back as 9,500 years ago. These mountains and surrounding landscapes were part of a much larger network of places where Indigenous peoples hunted, gathered seasonal foods, established temporary camps, and traveled between communities.
The broader region provided important resources, including deer, elk, other wildlife, wild plants, and fish. Lakes, rivers, upland meadows, and forested mountain slopes all played important roles in Indigenous lifeways. Trails connected communities across central Oregon, supporting travel, trade, and the sharing of resources and knowledge across generations.
Here at Odell Lake, archaeological discoveries remind us that people were connected to this landscape thousands of years before it became the destination we know today. The history of this place is far deeper than its modern name, shoreline, or recreation areas.
Today, we recognize the Molala, Klamath, and other Indigenous peoples associated with the broader region, honoring their histories, living cultures, and continuing connections to their ancestral lands.
As we enjoy the beauty of Odell Lake, we invite our guests and community to take a moment to reflect, learn, and appreciate the Indigenous history of this special place. May we continue to care for these lands and waters with respect, gratitude, and a commitment to understanding the stories that came before us. ❤️
