If you are headed to the beach this Spring Break, WATCH OUT!

"Despite their delicate appearance, Portuguese man o' wars are extremely dangerous. Their tentacles, lurking beneath their balloon-like float, can reach up to 15 meters and are covered in thousands of stinging cells that can deliver venom capable of paralyzing and killing small fish and crustaceans, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). For humans, the sting packs a painful punch and can cause severe effects, such as fever, swelling, nausea and even death in some rare cases."

Portuguese man o' wars have been spotted washing up on Texas beaches, including at Galveston Island State Park.

*INCREASED PATROLS FOR GO TOPLESS WEEKEND*

Sheriff Brian Hawthorne wants to remind everyone with “Go Topless” weekend in full swing, our deputies will be out in full force working the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (through the Texas Department of Transportation) in the areas of Interstate Highway 10 and State Highway 124 to the Intracoastal Bridge. This enforcement period will be in effect from Friday May 20th through Sunday May 22nd.

Just this year, a Chambers County jury convicted a 27 year old man in the deaths of two individuals that occurred in May of 2018. This case, which was prosecuted by the Chambers County District Attorney’s Office, involved a driver, who was intoxicated, had just left “Go Topless” when he struck another vehicle head on. This weekend’s initiative is zero tolerance and deputies will be focusing their efforts heavily on speeders and intoxicated drivers.

Remember to buckle up; don’t drink and drive; slow down and move over for police, fire, or EMS, and show the same courtesy to fellow drivers who are stopped on the side of the road. Lastly, steer it, clear it: if you are involved in a non-injury crash and your vehicle can be moved, clear the traffic lanes to minimize traffic impact.
