Some places hold more than history—they hold a personality.

Tucked into the trees near Legion Lake, the Badger Hole was the home of Charles “Badger” Clark, South Dakota’s first poet laureate. Clark built the cabin and spent the final 30 years of his life in Custer State Park, writing poetry, reading from his extensive library and welcoming a steady stream of friends and admirers.

Today, the cabin remains much as he left it. We tell Badger’s story here because the Badger Hole offers more than a glimpse into the past—it helps us understand how the landscape, independence and spirit of the West shaped both the man and his words.

Visit the cabin, then take a walk along the Badger Clark Historic Trail and experience a quieter piece of Custer State Park.

The Badger Hole is located south of Highway 16A on Badger Clark Road and is open Memorial Day through Labor Day, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We love the Sunday Gultch Trail, but you should respect it as a difficult climb. Don't go in w/o water and good health to back you up. Elevation and heat are deal- breakers

this is how serious Custer is about their 4th of July celebrations. There is usually a BOMBER es**rt in the skies!!

We know many of you have been asking about a flyover this year, and we wanted to provide an update.

Back in December, our request for a military flyover was approved. Unfortunately, we were notified on June 1 that the B-1 bombers from our local base had been deployed and would no longer be available to participate in our July 4 celebration.

As soon as we received that news, we immediately began reaching out to numerous other military bases in an effort to secure a replacement aircraft. While we have explored every opportunity available to us, we have not yet been able to secure another flyover.

If that changes before July 4, we will certainly let everyone know. While we're disappointed that a flyover may not be possible this year, we are incredibly grateful to the men and women serving our country. Our thoughts are with all of the deployed military personnel, and we hope they remain safe throughout their mission and return home to their families safely.

Thank you for your understanding and for your continued support of our military and veterans.
