“She’s our strongest hive. She’s fine.”

Then we looked in the strainer.

Nineteen mites off 300 bees. The threshold is three.

Turns out Deborah being the biggest colony in the yard means she’s also the biggest mite hotel in the yard. More brood, more drones, more vacancy. She was never fine. She was just good at looking fine.

Colonies at this level don’t die in September. They die in January, in a hive still full of honey, because the bees being born right now are the winter bees and something has been eating them from the inside.

Supers are off. Oxalic acid strips are going in. Then six weeks of leaving her alone and trying not to think about it.

Wash your bees. The hive that looks best is usually the one hiding the most. 🐝
