Oleander in the American South
Oleander is one of the most recognizable flowering shrubs in the South, especially along the Gulf Coast. It was introduced from the Mediterranean region in the 1700s and became popular because it thrives in hot, humid climates.
Why It Grows So Well on the Gulf Coast
Handles intense summer heat.
Tolerates drought once established.
Resists salt spray from coastal winds.
Blooms from late spring through fall.
Can survive in sandy soils common along the coast.
Oleander on Dauphin Island
On Dauphin Island and other Gulf Coast communities, oleanders are often planted:
Around homes and campgrounds.
Along roadsides and driveways.
As privacy screens and windbreaks.
In coastal landscapes where many flowering plants struggle.
The white variety, like the one in your photo, is especially popular because it reflects sunlight and looks striking against dark green foliage.
Historical Southern Use
During the late 1800s and early 1900s, oleanders became a favorite ornamental shrub throughout Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Florida. Many historic Southern homes planted them near porches and entrances because they provided color for much of the year.
Interesting Fact
Some oleanders along the Gulf Coast are decades old. Mature plants can grow 8–15 feet tall and become almost tree-like if left unpruned.
Important Safety Note
All parts of the oleander plant are highly toxic if eaten by people, pets, or livestock. Even the sap can irritate sensitive skin, so gloves are recommended when pruning.

"The white oleander is a classic Gulf Coast shrub, prized for its beautiful blooms, salt tolerance, and ability to thrive in the hot, sandy conditions of coastal Alabama. Its flowers have brightened Southern landscapes for generations."
