Fall color's will be gone but the best hiking of the year will starting. Once the leaves drop, the overlooks at Dolly Sods and Bear Rocks open all the way up — you can see clear across the Canaan Valley without a single branch in the way. Cold mornings, empty trails, big views. Come warm up back at Hibernation Station with the fireplace going and the hot tub waiting.

October is the month people plan their whole year around. 🍁

This is peak leaf season in Tucker County — the ridgelines go red and gold almost overnight, and Canaan Valley turns into one of the best color displays in the East. It's also the month that books up fastest, every single year.

If October is on your radar, now's the time to grab your dates before someone else does.

Some of the best views in West Virginia are a short drive from your front door. 🥾

Dolly Sods looks like nowhere else in the state — wind-bent trees, open rock, sky for days. Blackwater Falls is postcard-famous for a reason. Both are close enough to hike all day and still be back in time to warm up by the fireplace.

That's the whole idea behind Hibernation Station: go hard outside, come back to easy.

Plan your trip.

November is quieter, colder, and honestly kind of perfect. ❄️

The crowds thin out, the trails feel like they're yours alone, and the first frost mornings make that woodstove feel earned. It's the kind of cozy that makes you not want to leave — which is exactly the point.

Fall dates are filling up across all three months. Grab yours before the calendar does.

A good trip isn't just where you sleep — it's where you end the night. 🎶

After a day on the trails, head into Davis for dinner and live music at the Purple Fiddle. Grab a bite, catch a local band, then walk it off under a sky full of stars on the drive back to the cabin.

Hibernation Station puts you close enough to do it all without a long drive either way.

Book your fall weekend.

September in Canaan Valley might be our favorite kept secret. ☀️

Warm enough for coffee on the porch in a flannel. Cool enough for a fire at night. The first hints of color are just starting to show up on the ridges, and the crowds haven't caught on yet.

If you want fall before everyone else finds it, this is your window.

Hibernation Station is open and waiting.

# **A Look Back at Davis, West Virginia**

# # **Part 8 – The Wild Country That Was Saved**

Just a few miles from Davis lies a place that looks almost nothing like the mountains surrounding it.

**Dolly Sods.**

Today, it is known for windswept plains, stunted red spruce, rocky ridges, sweeping views and some of the most rugged hiking in the Mid-Atlantic.
But Dolly Sods has a remarkable history of its own.
Long before it became a wilderness destination, the area was heavily logged. During the great timber boom, vast quantities of red spruce and other valuable timber were removed from the highlands.

Then came another chapter that few people realize.

During World War II, the U.S. military used parts of Dolly Sods for artillery training. Unexploded ordnance remained scattered across portions of the plateau for decades afterward.

Fortunately, the story didn't end there.

As Americans began to recognize the importance of preserving wild places, efforts grew to protect Dolly Sods and the surrounding highlands. The area eventually became part of the **Monongahela National Forest**, and in 1975, approximately 10,000 acres of Dolly Sods were designated as wilderness under the federal Wilderness Act.

That decision helped preserve something increasingly rare—a large area where nature, rather than development, would remain the dominant force.

The transformation is remarkable.
The mountains around Davis were once valued primarily for what could be **taken from them**.

Today, they are valued for what they allow us to **experience**.

Hikers come for the trails. Photographers come for the views. Hunters and anglers come for the wildlife. Families come to explore. And adventurers come simply to see what is around the next bend.

Dolly Sods became more than a wilderness.
It became part of the identity of Davis.

And protecting places like Dolly Sods helped ensure that future generations would know these mountains not just from photographs and history books—but by walking through them.

*Have you explored Dolly Sods? What's your favorite place up there?*

Fall is calling, and Hibernation Station is answering. 🍂

There's a reason people drive hours to watch these mountains turn color — and an even better reason to do it from a warm cabin instead of a crowded overlook. September through November is peak season in Tucker County, and we've got a front-row seat.

Wake up to fog rolling through the valley. Spend your day chasing color at Blackwater Falls or Dolly Sods. Come back to a cabin that's already warm and already yours.

Fall weekends go fast in Canaan Valley — book now.
