Looking for a place to create Melt the ICE hats? A Place to Sew is offering retreat space at no cost from Sunday afternoon to Wednesday noon (Feb. 1-4) for anyone who wants support and camaraderie. The living room overlooking the Mississippi River is a peaceful place to knit and crochet and there's room for 10 to stay. Sign up individually or as a group. Stay for one night or for the day if that works. Go to aplacetosew.com to get contact info for reserving a spot. The initiative was started by Needle & Skein of St. Louis Park, Minn., which created the pattern that can be downloaded for $5 on Ravelry at https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/melt-the-ice-hat. The shop has raised more than $250,000 with the money going to the St. Louis Park Emergency Program for rent and other aid and the Immigrant Rapid Response Fund. Other yarn shops across the country are also donating some portion of their proceeds from red yarn sales.

๐Ÿ’—One of the sweetest things to happen at A Place to Sew in my seven years is when some members of the Candlelight Quilters gathered to stay overnight and relive memories from when they used to come for retreats. At that time, most worked at the same hospital so it was a getaway to hash out world problems, catch up on family topics, spend time with friends, eat, laugh and also get some quilting done. As life moved on they stopped coming but then one member, who found A Place to Sew and then made the plans each year, was dealing with a serious illness. So the others surprised her with this gathering--not letting her know where she was going until they were part way there! As one member said, what we can give her is our time. What a priceless gift. The friend passed away this month but as the member said, "We have our memories."๐Ÿ’ž

A recent group had fun swapping fabric with pet motifs--mostly cats and dogs but also snakes for humor--to make quilts. Love when groups work together on a theme. One guest also made four quilts from shirts worn by her father who passed away a year ago.

I took one last trip across the Black Hawk Bridge to Lansing, Iowa on Sunday before it closed Monday. A car ferry will start up in a few weeks and a new bridge will open in 2027. But I will miss this iconic bridge and the rumbling sound as you drove across the steel grid deck.

A Place to Sew is ready for the group coming this weekend to work on their scrapbooks and I love that idea. I hope all of my guests are getting the chance to gather together with people who love them if not today than sometime in the future. I am grateful for all of you and what you bring to the retreat and to each other.
