Whether you want a relaxed morning walk, a historic stroll through Deadwood or Lead, or a short hike with a big view, there are plenty of options just minutes away.
Here are just a few
George S. Mickelson Trail
This is one of the best-known trails in the Black Hills. The Mickelson Trail stretches 109 miles through the Hills, with a crushed limestone surface, more than 100 converted railroad bridges, and multiple trailheads. The Deadwood and Lead area gives guests easy access for a short walk, bike ride, or longer adventure. It’s a great option for families, casual walkers, and anyone who wants a peaceful Black Hills trail experience.
Homestake Trail
The Homestake Trail connects the Deadwood and Lead area and is a great choice for guests who want a scenic walk with mining history along the way. The City of Deadwood lists it as a 5.7-mile out-and-back trail that is generally considered easy, popular for hiking, birding, and mountain biking.
Mount Roosevelt / Friendship Tower Trail
Just outside Deadwood, this short hike leads to the historic Friendship Tower, built by Seth Bullock in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt. The Forest Service lists the trail to the tower at about 1 mile round trip, with the tower area open sunrise to sunset and no fee required. It’s a short hike with a big Black Hills payoff.
Mount Roosevelt Loop Trail
For another nearby option, the Mount Roosevelt Loop is a short 0.8-mile loop near Deadwood. It is considered moderately challenging, and dogs are welcome on leash. The trail can have steep sections, loose rock, and uneven surfaces, so it’s short but still feels like a real hike.
Downtown Deadwood to Mount Roosevelt Loop
Guests looking for a longer outing can explore the Downtown Deadwood to Mount Roosevelt Loop. Deadwood lists this as a 6.2-mile loop with a moderately challenging route, a generous climb, and views of Deadwood and Bear Butte.
Mount Moriah Cemetery Loop
For history lovers, Mount Moriah is more than a cemetery walk. This 1-mile loop includes the gravesites of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, along with a steep climb toward Seth Bullock’s grave. The trail is paved, but sections are moderately steep, so it’s best to take your time and enjoy the history. Dogs are not allowed on this trail.
White Rocks and Seth Bullock Grave Loop
This 2.4-mile loop near Deadwood is a great option for guests who want a little more adventure without driving far. It’s considered moderately challenging and is popular for hiking, birding, and running. Dogs are welcome on leash, and motorized vehicles are not allowed on the trail.
Saint Ambrose Cemetery Trail
This short 0.6-mile trail takes walkers through historic Deadwood neighborhoods and an 1800s cemetery, with views of White Rocks, Brown Rocks, and the Days of ’76 Rodeo Grounds. It’s short, scenic, and full of local character.
Gold Run Interpretive Trail in Lead
For a quick walk with mining history, Gold Run Park in Lead is a great stop. The trail is located on the former Homestake Mining Company gold mill site and winds through old concrete foundations, mining relics, interpretive signs, and display decks with views of Lead.
Lead Urban Trails
Lead also offers several short urban walking routes, including the Gold Run Interpretive Trail, Urban Art Walk, Lead Historic Main Street Trail, Mickelson Trail Lead Railroad Spur, Homestake Trail, and Lead Overlook Trail. These routes combine mountain-town scenery, mining history, art, and access to the Mickelson Trail.
