🍁The leaves are popping in McKittrick Canyon right now. All photos were taken by me () this afternoon on 11/3.

🚗This portion of Guadalupe Mountains National Park is one of the best places in Texas to see Fall colors, and you’ve still got time for a last minute road trip and stay at The Guad. We’re just down the road from the park.

🥾You start to really see some color a couple miles into the McKittrick Canyon Trail as you approach the Pratt Cabin. Then the portion of trail between the Pratt Cabin and the Grotto is the highest density of color.

🦕How cool are these lil’ baby dinosaurs we have running around at The Guad?

🩸Here’s a wild fact about the Texas Horned Lizard… they have the ability to sq**rt an aimed stream of blood from the corners of their eyes up to 5 ft. They do this by restricting the blood flow leaving the head, thereby increasing blood pressure and rupturing tiny vessels around the eyelids.

🐺This not only confuses would-be predators, but also the blood is mixed with a chemical that is foul-tasting to canine predators such as wolves, coyotes, and domestic dogs.

🌾The Guad’s closest neighbors are the friendly folks of Dell City, TX, a tiny farming community of just over 200 people about 10 miles to the north.

⛽️They have gas stations and a couple tasty restaurants and spots to buy basic groceries.

🌮We definitely encourage you to try one of the places in town, but also understand this is a tiny town and you can’t rely on it for your supplies. You need to bring in what you need with you.

☎️Operating hours can vary, so calling ahead to see if they’re cooking is always a good call.

2) Dell City had the smallest high school in the state to still field a football team
3) Chili Peppers growing in the shadow of the Guadalupe Mountains
4) Sea of Sunflowers
5) Spanish Angel’s Cafe - my () favorite place in town to sit down for a meal. Good food, good ambiance.
6) Two T’s - Best place to buy a cold 6 pack of Budweiser
7) Rosita’s Cafe - good Mexican food open for breakfast and lunch
8) The farms that keep the town alive

Every site at The Guad has its own little mini-library with a handful of books. They are a mix of fiction, history and coffee table books, most of which have some sort of western or regional ties.

We’re all trying to break our phone addictions, and picking up a book while you’re out on the range is a good way to start.

✨Far West Texas is one of the best places in the country to see the night sky come alive.

🌌The Milky Way and about a million stars will start to fill the sky as soon as the sun dips below the horizon.

💫If you just sit around your campfire staring up at the sky for a while, you’re almost guaranteed to see a shooting star during a night at The Guad.
