Dad set the alarm for 5:00 AM.

On vacation.

Think about that for a second.

The man works all year long, finally gets a week off, and somehow finds himself waking up earlier than he does at home.

Why?

Pool chairs.

Coffee in hand, Dad quietly sneaks out of the room like he’s on a top-secret mission.

The objective?

Secure four lounge chairs before the rest of civilization wakes up.

He gets to the pool.

Mission failed.

Every chair is taken.

Not by people.

By towels.

A blue towel.

A striped towel.

A flip-flop.

A paperback book nobody is reading.

One chair was basically being guarded by a bottle of SPF 30.

The chairs were there.

The people were not.

Dad stood there looking around like he’d arrived late to a concert.

At 6:00 am in the morning.

So he grabbed the only chairs he could find and went back upstairs.

A few hours later, he returned with the family.

Something strange happened.

Half the chairs were still empty.

The towels had shown up.

The guests had not.

The family spent the rest of the week doing what thousands of resort guests do every year.

Chair hunting.

Chair moving.

Chair negotiating.

Chair diplomacy.

On vacation.

About 6 months later they tried something different.

A private vacation home.

The first morning, Dad woke up naturally.

No alarm.

No mission.

No tactical chair acquisition strategy.

He poured a cup of coffee, walked outside, and every chair by the pool was available.
