🪂 Today is National Airborne Day! 🪂

On August 16, 1940, the U.S. Army carried out its very first official parachute jump by an organized unit. Just four years later, the skies over Holland were filled with thousands of paratroopers leaping into history.

📸 Paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division float down above Groesbeek, 17 September 1944. For Dutch civilians on the ground, those parachutes meant hope. For the paratroopers, it marked the beginning of some of the fiercest fighting of the war.
