Checked In: Fall Edition 🍂

And there it is — your room for the weekend. Mountain mural on the wall, four paws already claiming the good spot on the bed.

This is the whole plan: nowhere to be, nothing to check off, just Colfax light coming through the window and a weekend that moves as slow as you let it.

Bring the dog. Bring the flannel. Leave the itinerary at home.

Long before it became the longest commercial avenue in America, Colfax began as a Native American trail traveled by the Ute, Arapaho, and Cheyenne peoples. As Denver grew, the route evolved (due to the gold rush) into one of the city’s most prestigious boulevards, lined with grand mansions before transforming into the vibrant commercial corridor we know today.
By the 1920s, East Colfax was booming. In 1926, the magnificent Aladdin Theatre opened its doors, quickly becoming one of Denver’s most spectacular movie palaces. Inspired by the architecture of the Taj Mahal and the tales of Arabian Nights, the theater featured a six-story onion dome, ornate Moorish details, fountains, palm trees, and a ceiling that twinkled like the night sky. It was also among the first theaters in Denver to showcase “talking pictures,” marking the beginning of a new era in cinema. Though the beloved theater was demolished in 1984, to become a Walgreens, it remains one of Denver’s greatest architectural losses.
Just blocks away, the Weicker Transfer & Storage Building, also completed in 1926, stood as a symbol of Denver’s rapid growth. Nicknamed the “Storage Castle,” its striking Italian Renaissance design proved that even a warehouse could be a work of art. As families transitioned from sprawling Victorian homes into apartments, Weicker safely stored everything from heirloom furniture and pianos to treasured family keepsakes. Nearly a century later, it still stands as one of East Colfax’s most recognizable landmarks.
Then came the golden age of the American road trip. By the 1950s, Colfax had become the gateway to the Rockies, lined with glowing neon signs, diners, and motor courts welcoming travelers from across the country, including La Vista Motel, which opened its doors in 1956.
Colfax has always been more than a road. It’s a timeline of Denver itself, shaped by movement, architecture, entertainment, and the communities that have called it home. We’re proud to be part of its story and excited to help preserve its next chapter.

BEFORE AND AFTER RENOVATIONS - Built in 1956, La Vista Motel welcomed travelers during the golden age of road trips, when East Colfax was the gateway to the Rocky Mountains.
After I-70 redirected traffic in the 1960s and ‘70s, the motel gradually fell into decline and eventually closed. In 2022, developer Nathan Beal purchased the property and restored its mid-century charm, reopening La Vista in late 2025 alongside El Piñon.
Today, La Vista is proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a restored Colfax icon ready for its next chapter.

Looking to celebrate Pride in more than one city? Make La Vista your home base. 🌈
We’re celebrating all month long with our signature Pride cocktail, the GiGi, created in honor of Gary Givant, a Denver DJ legend who’s been keeping dance floors moving for nearly 50 years. For every GiGi sold, $2 will be donated to The Center on Colfax, which has been supporting Colorado’s LGBTQ+ community since the 1970s.
And don’t miss our Pride Patio Party on Saturday, June 27, from 2–6 PM, featuring and himself. Expect great music, good vibes, and plenty of reasons to celebrate. Free to attend.
