King tides in 2026 are expected to bring the highest seasonal water levels of the year, with significant tidal events forecast in early January, throughout the spring and summer months, and again late in the year due to lunar alignment.
The first major event occurred January 1ā4, 2026, impacting coastal areas across Oregon and California. Additional elevated tides over 9 feet are expected on the following dates: April 17ā19, May 15ā21, June 13ā16, July 12ā15, August 10ā13, October 25ā31, November 23ā27, and December 24ā25. (A good storm with wind and rain makes it more dramatic)
These extreme high tides may lead to coastal flooding, erosion, and temporary road closures, even during otherwise calm weather conditions. Low-lying areas are particularly vulnerable during king tide events.
Officials also warn of increased risk from sneaker waves and hazardous surf, especially when tides coincide with storms. Beachgoers are urged to remain alert, keep a safe distance from the water, and never turn their back on the ocean.
Popular viewing locations along the Oregon Coast include Shore Acres, Yachats and Depoe Bay, where large waves and dramatic coastal conditions can be observed. Visitors are encouraged to use caution when visiting these areas.
Members of the public are also encouraged to photograph and document king tide events. These observations provide valuable data to help scientists and coastal planners better understand and prepare for future sea-level rise.
