Come Write Your Memories In The Sand

It began for me in 1979 when I moved across country from Southern California with two very small children, one still in diapers. Destin was a sleepy fishing village, and very proud of that! The charter boats were homed at the Kelly Docks which is where the Emerald Grand and Harbor Walk Village is today. There was a small store for bait and fishing supplies called Captain Dukes, the Wharf restaurant that had been there for many years, and the most beautiful Magnolia tree, which is petrified at the Harbor Walk Village today. I feel sad the tree is no longer there. My children climbed the tree, parked their bikes and played there.

Our doctor was located close to Kelly Docks on highway 98/Emerald Coast Parkway. Dr. Odom was one of the first doctors in Destin. Close by was the drug store, post office, library and museum. Destin was small back then and most everyone knew your name when you went to the post office or bank. Oh, have things changed over the years.

My heart at times longs for the “good ole’ days”, however, being a realist, I understand the necessity of growth and progress. Destin, as a town has changed. From October/November.. what there was when I moved here closed until March, around Spring Break time. I remember racing my husband with our small son, and me with our small daughter down old highway 98 after their practice of sorts, and a pizza at the Lantern, (no longer there) to see who would get home first. Saying that now, doesn’t feel too responsible, however, back then there wasn’t the congestion on the roads we have currently. We didn’t even have a Sheriff until later. His name was Bo, and our children attended Destin Elementary School together, which was very small then.

There is great History in our area. I would love to tell you what I know.
