🏴‍☠️ BILLY BOWLEGS: The 70th annual Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival returns to Fort Walton Beach this week, with retired Air Force veteran Rique Gwin leading the Krewe of Bowlegs as Captain Billy.

Gwin and his wife Kelly, both retired from the Air Force, first moved to the area in 2000 and made Fort Walton Beach their permanent home after years of military relocations. Their involvement with the Krewe began through friends and grew over nearly a decade before the couple was asked to serve in leadership roles.

This year, the Krewe is paying tribute to the military heritage of the local area as an official member of the Okaloosa County America 250 commission, weaving patriotic elements into festival events.

The festival also introduces new elements through the William Augustus Bowles Museum & Historical Foundation, including scholarships for local high school students sponsored by David Scott Lee dealership and a 30-day treasure hunt with coins hidden from Niceville to Mary Esther.

The festival, presented by Felicity Plastic Surgery, runs May 14–18 and features a Friday night fireworks show, the Saturday pirate landing at 3:30 p.m. and the Monday torchlight parade along Eglin Parkway.

"When you see it all come together, see the kids' faces and all the people at the landing super excited, it really is worth every bit of effort you put into it," Gwin said.

Festival schedule:

🏴‍☠️Thursday, May 14: Little Skallywags "Meet The Pirates" with downtown merchants, 4–6 p.m.

🏴‍☠️Friday, May 15: Festival at the Landing, 5–9 p.m. — vendor booths, food trucks, live music from Grace & Grit, Pirate Skirmish at 7 p.m., fireworks at 8:45 p.m.

🏴‍☠️Saturday, May 16: Festival at the Landing, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. — Parker & Ivoree from 1–3 p.m., 70th Krewe of Bowlegs Pirate Landing at 3:30 p.m., The Aces from 4–6 p.m.

🏴‍☠️Monday, May 18: Billy Bowlegs Torchlight Parade at 7 p.m. along Eglin Parkway between First Street and Hughes Street

BEACH RENOURISHMENT: A long-awaited beach renourishment project will begin the week of March 23 in Destin to restore approximately 150,600 cubic yards of sand lost to erosion from Hurricane Sally in 2020.

The $10 million project is largely funded through federal disaster recovery assistance, with $9 million coming from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and $1 million from Okaloosa County tourism beach restoration reserve funds.

Immediately following Hurricane Sally, Okaloosa County staff met with FEMA staff onsite to conduct visual estimates of beach erosion and begin the process of receiving federal restoration funds.

The project encompasses two areas of west Destin beaches, located between the South Bay by the Gulf Condos and the jetty, with a small gap separating the two sections. Mobilization of equipment will begin the week of March 23, with actual dredging starting in April.
