What a delight to host some fabulous folks from the Urban Consulate last week! Founded by our old friend Claire Nelson in 2016, the Urban Consulate brings people together to share ideas for more just and equitable communities. Over the last decade, they have hosted hundreds of impactful and inspiring public conversations in Detroit, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Austin, Cincinnati and Chicagoland.

They were in Detroit last week holding a conversation between Urban Consulate host Orlando P. Bailey—pictured here with his fiancée Shannon—and Bryan Stevenson, a leading US social justice activist and the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative.

The talk took place on Sunday at the Garden Theatre here in Midtown, but we felt like we had early admission tickets all week—the parlor was buzzing! Thanks to Orlando, Claire, and the rest of the Consulate team for all their great work and for bringing such vibrant energy to our corner of Detroit.

Meet Dave, a fascinating regular guest of El Moore Lodge and the Operations Manager for Barcade - Detroit! 🕹️🍻

“The Original Arcade Bar,” Barcade is a Brooklyn-based operator of 1980s-style videogame arcades that serve American-brewed craft beer, cocktails, and food. With 10 locations around the country, they opened Detroit’s Barcade in 2021 on Selden, just a couple blocks from El Moore! It features 75 vintage games, including some with a Detroit flavor, like Robocop and Alice Cooper’s Nightmare Castle, as well as a menu with local options like Coney Chili, Michigan-brewed beer, and spirits from local distilleries.

Dave lives in New York and visits Detroit for work at least once a quarter. He says he appreciates being part of the Midtown community and his many stays at El Moore. He tells us he has stayed in almost every type of room we offer and enjoyed them all, adding that our team makes him feel like he’s staying at a friend’s house 😊

Besides Dave, one thing that El Moore and Barcade have in common is our shared passion for sustainability 🌎 All of Barcade’s locations are Green Restaurant Association-certified for operational decisions such as serving only draft beer (with no single-use beverages available for purchase), recycling, and using compostable disposable products. Like us, they’re also fond of reclaimed materials, reusing everything from wood to doors, windows, and light fixtures in their buildings.

Next time you’re staying at El Moore, take the short walk over to Barcade and spend some time enjoying your favorite classic arcade games! Those high scores aren’t going to earn themselves....
