Been spending quite a bit of time around home this spring. One benefit of all the wind we have had this spring is that the shallow water isn’t overly clear and a lot of the fun, traditional shallow bites are setting up nice. Typically when we have this cold of water temps for this time of year, a lot of spots really clear up and we end up having to slide deeper. About 2 feet of visibility is perfect.

Water temperature is no longer an excuse as it was well into the mid 60s everywhere we looked today. Water clarity is another story.

It has been difficult to find off colored water right now here on Devils Lake, ND. If there is a little chop, that helps.

When you find the right conditions fish are there. 1/4 oz jigs with your favorite paddle tail will catch more fish than you can shake a stick at.

Things are so close to busting wide open here on Visit Devils Lake, North Dakota.

We didn't have much sun today so the water temps held steady. Found 56 degrees and that was where most of the fish were.

Z Man baits were the clear winners today. The Shad Z and the Swimmer Z both produced. Perfect Perch was the best color. The fish were not tight to shore either. Boat in 8 feet. Most fish hit when casting parallel to shore.

Windy and rainy tonight. Calmer tomorrow but not much for sun. I sure hope the weather turns around soon.

What a difference a day (and some warm weather) makes. Fished the same areas as yesterday that yielded zero walleye. Today we managed seven solid eyes and a ton of pike.

6 of the 7 walleye came on the same swim bait. I never put one on my rod. I tried many other options while my clients caught every walleye. As much as they pleaded for me to put the right one on, I had to prove it wasn't the only one that would work. I was wrong.

As I have said a million times, color doesn't matter till it matters. Today it must have.

Another tip, they are not all on the shoreline. As many were caught on the deep side as the shallow side today.

Water temp crept up to 53 degrees.

Just for clarity, I had two clients today. No rules or limits were violated.
