Malheur Field Station - The Great Basin Society, Inc.

Malheur Field Station is an educational non-profit organization located on the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. We also have public lodging. Established 1971

Our mission is to facilitate connection with nature through science, exploration, and the arts. The Field Station is surrounded by diverse desert, wetlands, and mountains. In these varied habitats, visitors have opportunities to witness a spectacular array of birds, plants, geological landscapes and incredible dark night skies. Malheur Field Station is an educational and research nonprofit dedicated to lifelong learning in and about the northern Great Basin region.

Part of our new vision here at the Malheur Field Station is an entirely new approach to our food. Fresh. Homemade. Eclectic. Various ethnic recipes and themes. Tons of produce. Organic and natural proteins.

If you didn’t know, we have a cozy and large dining hall, and offer cooking services to all of our programs, and invite any guests to purchase meals when the kitchen is open! It’s not just a place to eat, it’s a place to gather and connect.

Groups of 10 or more can hire our kitchen!

What’s on our mind FB asks? Moonrise. This is literally the front yard view of Malheur Field Station to the east. Who wants to come soak this in? Paint it? Explore? We have public lodging from 1-100 people. Year round. Come out for a visit!

In the past two weeks we were so thrilled to have college students from both Linfield University and OSU at MFS! And we can’t wait for them to return next year!

Our new vision includes continuing to expand outreach to higher ed schools to bring more and more students to Malheur to engage with and experience this spectacular ecosystem!

University level education is at the foundational history of the field station, and we are working hard to re-establish it.

we now have a 20’ awning along our front patio. Come relax and watch our fountains, birds, desert view! Bring a picnic!
