SUNDAY FUNDAY - YOU REALLY CAN’T MAKE THIS STUFF UP!
The phone rings. I answer, “Hello, Babbling Brook Cottages, how can I help you?” And then I never quite know what’s coming next! After more than six years of answering the phone, we thought today we’d share three of our favorite REAL conversations. And yes, we still use a cordless phone with answering machine.
1. THE CABIN OR ROOM?
Caller: “Do you have cabins?” Me: “Yes.” Caller: “Do you rent them?” Me: “Yes.” Caller: “How much is a room for tonight?”
Me: “We don’t have rooms. We have five cabins. Each has its own bedroom, bathroom and kitchen or kitchenette, etc. Think small house 200-500 square feet, and we provide just about everything. Have you been on our website? They are all unique and different.”
Caller: “Yes, but I don’t need anything fancy like a whole cabin. I just need a room for tonight. How much are your rooms?” Me: “We don’t have rooms. And we have a two night minimum stay.”
Caller: Click.
They hang up on me.
Some version of this conversation happens EVERY SINGLE WEEK and yes, sometimes at 2 AM!
2. THE CABIN SHOPPING LIST
Caller: “I need three Bear Claw Cabins, two Fireside Pines, and which other one do you recommend, Stargazer or Snugglers Notch? Because I’ll need three of those, too.”
Me: “We only have one of each. We have a total of five cabins, each with its own name. Have you been on our website?”
Caller: “Yes, that’s how I know I need all of these because we have a large group, atleast 20 people. I’ve been looking at it for a while now, but I can’t seem to book more than one of each. That’s why I’m calling.”
(Well, I think we’ve solved that mystery!)
3. THE MYSTERIOUS LAKE
Caller: “Which cabin overlooks the lake and has the best mountaintop views?”
Me: “Well, we don’t have a lake. And while we’re in the Pocono Mountains, they are not the Swiss Alps or the Colorado Rockies. We’re surrounded by woods.”
Caller: “Oh. OK, can we swim in the lake?”
Me: “We don’t have a lake.”
Caller: “Oh, what do you have then?”
And here’s what we often wonder…
We’ve spent countless hours making our website as informative as possible, with photos, descriptions, policies, and answers to just about everything.
So when we get some of these questions, we genuinely wonder… are we somehow not communicating this clearly enough? Did we accidentally post a picture of a cabin overlooking a lake with the Rocky Mountains in the background? 😂😂
But we also understand that sometimes people just want a friendly voice on the other end of the phone. Someone real who can answer their questions, share a little personal insight, and reassure them that the cabins, the photographs, and the people caring for them are all real, too.
And yes, we love those conversations.
But sometimes, answering these first 3 questions without rolling my eyes is the hardest part of my job!🙄🙄🙄
