We are learning about oceans and ponds and the wonders of life below the sea. In our centers we have ocean-themed letter and shape tracing, letter matching and rhyming clam activities. We discussed what we see in a pond, including frogs. We then learned about the life cycle of a frog and made a booklet putting the steps in the correct order. Later, they were put to the test with a hands-on sequencing activity where they had to cut out the stages and glue them in the correct order. For provocations we enjoyed playing with assorted sensory bins filled with sand, water, fish, blue rice and glass stones. The children also explored some shells with a magnifying glass and used our toy fishing kit. For art activities, the children created their own jellyfish and painted rocks for our garden. We read some wonderful books this week, including “I’m the Biggest Thing in the Ocean,” “Over in the Ocean In a Coral Reef,” and “My Little Book of Ocean Life,” taking us on a journey further into ocean facts about our favorite sea creatures. For our Scholastic activity, we learned the vocabulary word aquatic and compared different animals such as dolphins, seals, and whales that live in watery habitats. As a follow-up activity, students sorted animals to decide: “Is it aquatic?” It was a fun and engaging way to build science vocabulary and critical thinking skills.

Our classroom was buzzing with excitement as we continued our spring exploration and dove into the amazing world of butterflies and insects. The children loved learning all about butterflies, their life cycle, what they need to grow, and the beautiful symmetry on their wings. Our spring centers have been full of hands-on fun with bug letter activities, bug tracing, caterpillar number games, butterfly facts, life cycle matching games, and butterfly sorting by color and size. We talked about insect wings, patterns, and how bees help flowers grow. After reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar, the children retold the story by completing a cutting and gluing sequencing activity. They sorted bee shapes into the correct beehives and talked about where bees live and what their job is. In the art shower, the children drew beautiful butterflies, buzzing bees, and spotted ladybugs using bright spring colors and creative designs. We have been carefully observing our caterpillars and butterflies like real scientists! The caterpillars started off tiny and then formed a chrysalis and finally this week, have emerged as butterflies! We released our butterflies and ladybugs into the garden today and wished them all good luck. We helped Morah Paulyne plant a herb garden, flowers and vegetables. The children had so much fun getting their hands dirty and using the different tools to dig and rake the soil.

Our spring exploration is in full bloom as we dive into the wonderful world of planting and flowers. The children have been busy learning how plants grow, discovering different parts of a flower, and exploring a variety of beautiful blooms. After reading “Plant the Tiny Seed,” we spoke about a plant's life cycle and discussed the different things a plant may need to survive. Each child filled up a small cup with soil, added grass seed and watered their seeds. We then placed them in the window so they will get lots of sunshine. We discussed each stage together and how plants change and grow over time. In our spring centers, we sorted flowers by color and size, practiced letter tracing and writing, did flower planting in our sensory bins and matched letters with our flower-themed activities. The children cut and glued the correct parts onto their flower worksheets, building both knowledge and fine motor skills. Our class had a very exciting addition - baby caterpillars -- larvae. We spent time observing our caterpillars, creating journals, drawing and writing our observations. In the art shower, we painted using artificial flowers, creating beautiful prints and patterns. The children explored texture, shape, and color while stamping and brushing with the flowers, resulting in unique and creative artwork. In recognition of the joyous holiday Lag B'Omer, we enjoyed field day, incorporating "camping" themed games, a picnic lunch and sports in our award-winning playground.

We have been having so much fun learning about spring weather and enjoying more time outside! We talked about rain, clouds, rainbows and mud. In our centers, the children enjoyed hands-on activities like matching uppercase and lowercase letters on raindrops and umbrellas, kite and rain-themed tracing, and spring number, letter, and shape tracing. Some provocations we explored this week were a gardening themed sensory bin. We examined the different types of bugs and plants that appear. We talked about how trees look different throughout the four seasons, drew four trees and then decorated them according to their season. We made “mud” using flour and brown paint and then the children played with toy pigs, making them muddy and washing them. Outside, we read the book Little Cloud. We looked up at the sky and talked about the shapes we saw in the clouds. Then the children used yarn dipped in white paint to create their own cloud art. The class spoke about how in spring many baby animals are born, so as an art project, we decided to make a bird's nest. For Earth Day, we learned how recycling helps take care of our planet and we created a booklet showing different ways to care for our Earth. Using blue paint for the water and green painted elbow pasta representing the land, the children created their own Earth. Our baby caterpillars (larvae) just arrived! The children are excited to observe the magic of the butterfly life cycle right before their eyes!

We have had thoughtful discussions on the story of Passover and what that means to us in addition to special activities, songs and artwork. All our classes joined Rabbi Saacks for baking in the Matzoh Factory! We made dough, rolled it out, poked holes and baked it in the traditional way-- quickly, for no more than 18 minutes. The children practiced important counting for the seder: drinking 4 glasses of wine, having 3 pieces of matzah on the table, and asking the 4 questions. They colored and painted an adorable keepsake booklet, "Pesach, Pesach What Do You See?,” decoupaged a wine cup (kiddush) to take home to adorn their seder table, helped make the charoset and chopped the parsley and decorated their own beautiful seder plates. We have also been discussing community helpers with parents and grandparents coming in to talk to the children about their jobs. The children drew their neighborhoods and the community helpers they see there, sharing their ideas. To make it even more enjoyable and deepen our understanding, we turned our classroom into a mini community! We now have a library, donut shop, veterinary hospital, construction site, and art studio all in our classroom. The children worked on a fun sorting activity matching tools to the correct community helper. We also learned about postal workers and how the mail gets delivered. We had a blast creating our own mail.

To kick off National Reading Month, we explored Dr. Seuss books in honor of his birthday. We talked about how his stories are full of humor, rhyming words, and even made-up words that make us laugh. Some provocations we explored were Dr. Seuss puzzles, a toy birthday cake, a fishing set, and some Dr. Seuss themed sensory bins. Then we explored fairy tales! We talked about what makes a story a fairy tale, the characters we often see, and how many fairy tales have a lesson and a happy ending. We read Goldilocks and the Three Bears and talked about big, medium, and small just like Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear. The children colored items by size and then had fun making their own castles. After reading Jack and the Beanstalk the children worked together to create a giant beanstalk using green paint and their fingertips to make the leaves. After reading The Three Little Pigs the children drew three houses and used different materials to build them: burlap for the straw house, toothpicks for the stick house, and paper shapes for the brick house. The children also rolled dice to help build Rapunzel’s tower using math cubes and our friends had fun feeding the "Very Hungry Caterpillar.” We also welcomed our special readers for National Reading Month; the children are thrilled to have their parents and grandparents come read a book to their friends.

We learned all about the planets, stars, and moon in our solar system. Our centers had day and night sorting activities, space tracing sheets, and space patterns. Our upper and lowercase letter game was space themed, and we also played alien shape sorting. The children created rocket ships by cutting out triangles and squares, coloring and gluing the shapes together, and then made it extra special by writing each letter of their name on their rocket. We added a picture of the children so they could be the astronauts on their ship! We visited Morah Paulyne’s “Astronaut Training Camp” where the children pretended to put on space suits and helmets, completed exercises, crawled into their spaceship, and then safely returned to Earth. They even encountered a meteor shower while visiting the moon. We celebrated the festive Purim holiday with singing and dancing, stories about the holiday and special crafts and snacks (yummy hamantaschen)! The children decorated and filled their Purim baskets with treats to trade with one another. We came to school dressed in our favorite costumes and had a parade throughout the building. Rabbi Saacks read a (shortened) traditional kid focused reading of the Megillah that was interactive and lots of fun with dancing, singing and shaking of our groggers. To kick off National Reading Month, we explored Dr. Seuss books. We’ve been talking about how his stories are full of humor, rhyming words, and even made-up words that make us laugh.

We have been having a dino-mite time learning about dinosaurs and what it means when we say dinosaurs are extinct. The children explored our dinosaur learning centers, letter tracing and puzzles, letter-matching games, and dinosaur facts area. We also practiced sorting dinosaur picture cards and eggs by size and searched for dinosaur fossils and eggs in our sensory bins. We made salt dough and pressed dinosaur skeleton cookie cutters into it to make an impression, baked them in the oven to harden, and got what looked like real fossils. In the discovery room, Morah Paulyne set up a dinosaur dig site where the children searched for fossils and dinosaur bones using hammers, brushes and picks. For a fun literacy activity called “Dino Dig Sound Match-Ups,” the children searched for pictures hidden inside “dinosaur eggs” and matched them to the correct beginning sound. We loved our visit with Spot the Triceratops and were able to feed, pet and ride him. During science, we made a volcano with dinosaurs, by mixing baking soda and vinegar, and made sure to rescue the dinosaurs from the volcano. We wrapped up our successful pajama drive with a special Pajama Day party. Dressed in our comfy pjs, we watched a short Bluey video and had delicious cookies for a special snack.

We had thoughtful discussions and did a myriad of activities about our feelings and emotions. The children sorted pictures, matching them with the correct emotions. In another activity, they circled the face that matched an emotion and then practiced making that same emotion while looking in the mirror. They also brainstormed kind ways to help a friend who might be feeling sad, such as giving a hug or inviting them to play. To teach our friends to keep a healthy mind, we practiced some yoga with Morah Paulyne. Our friends at Great Whites pediatric dentistry stopped by to talk about how important it is to keep our teeth healthy. The children ventured outside to play in the snow, sliding and stomping and making snow forts and snowmen. In honor of Tu Bishvat, the celebration of trees, we set up a “sedar” to enjoy many of the foods that grow on trees such as apples and pears plus foods that are native to Israel, such as dates and grapes. We transplanted an indoor tree as a group and are also growing lima beans in a plastic bag. During our art shower time, the children painted their own garden scenes.
