Did you know that Colorado has the highest average elevation of all the states? The average elevation is 6,800 feet. The low point is 3,317 feet out by the Kansas state line. The highest point is Mount Elbert at 14,440. Mount Elbert is the 2nd highest mountain in the lower 48 states. Mountain View Lodge is just below that average height at about 6,500 feet.

To help you get the most enjoyment of your time in Colorado, be aware of altitude sickness. The symptoms can include headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath. I want you to feel your best while you are here, so take precautions. Drink a lot of fluids to stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, eat well, allow time to acclimate. Consider talking with your doctor about medication options. Be aware and plan ahead to get the most out of your time in Colorado.

One of our favorite outdoor games is co****le. At Mountain View Lodge we have 2 heavy duty co****le sets made by my dad. We have really put them to use. The Bar D Chuckwagon is a fun family experience located north of Durango, CO. You get a wonderful meal and are entertained with western music and good humor. There are opportunities to shop, take a wagon ride, shoot targets, pan for gold, throw some horseshoes, or take a short hike. This is a memorable experience with a lot to do. So be sure to add this to your Southwest Colorado itinerary.

Mountain View Lodge is fortune to be next to a hay farm. Those open fields provide us with the wonderful views out across the valley to the Sleeping Ute Mountain. It is also a fun experience to watch the hay harvest process. About 3 times during the summer the fields are cut into nice neat rows and then the hay is baled. The tractors come in with the balers, sometimes 3 of them all going at once even in the dark. Once the bales are made another group of trucks come in and scoop up the bales and stack them on the back of the truck. Then those trucks take the hay stack and unload them near the barn for storage. It is such an organized process and surprisingly it happens pretty quickly. Maybe you will be fortunate enough to be staying at Mountain View Lodge and be able to see the hay harvest.

**Ghost town**
This is not exactly a ghost town though there are a few of those in Colorado. The ghost towns in Colorado are mostly abandoned mining towns up in the mountains. This is an uninhabited cabin that was probably used as a place for the cowboys to stay while they were rounding up the cattle for the fall cattle drive out of the mountains. This cabin sits along the Rio Lado trail about 30 minutes east of Dolores.

One of the iconic sites of Southwest Colorado is Ute Mountain, sometimes called Sleeping Ute Mountain. The first picture is Sleeping Ute Mountain from Mountain View Lodge. That is the east side of the mountain. The second picture is the north side of the same mountain taken from a point in Canyon of the Ancients National Monument. From this point the it does not look like a sleeping Ute Chief. No matter which view it is a beautiful mountain!

**Southwest Colorado Desperado**
Telluride was the location of one of Butch Cassidy's first major bank robberies. Back in 1889 he robbed the San Miguel Valley Bank and made off with about $21,000.

Wyatt Earp also fled to Colorado after the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. He spent time in Silverton and other mining towns.
