⚠️ New River Water Level/Paddlers Schedule Update

Due to extremely low water levels on the New River, our kayak, canoe, tube rentals and shuttle service will be CLOSED Saturday 6/20/26. We are keeping a close eye on conditions and have not made a final decision about Sunday yet. Since it’s Father’s Day weekend, we’re hoping water levels improve enough for us to open, but we’re feeling doubtful at this time and will make that call closer to Sunday as we continue monitoring river conditions.

🏕️ The campground remains OPEN and has campsites available! If you’re looking to relax by beautiful Reed Creek, fish, splash in the creek, or enjoy a peaceful camping weekend with dad, we’d love to have you.

Over the last 7 days I have shared simple safety tips to help you have a fun and safe adventure on the New River this summer. Here’s the last one!

🛶 River Safety Tip Day #7: What To Do If You Flip Your Kayak

Even experienced paddlers can tip over. If it happens, stay calm and remember these important safety tips:

✔️ MOST IMPORTANT: Float on your back with your feet up and pointed downstream (see photo)
✔️ Try to stay calm and avoid panic
✔️ NEVER try to stand up in moving water
✔️ Stay away from large rocks and strong current where your feet could become trapped
✔️ Swim to shore when it is safe to do so

One of the biggest dangers in moving water is getting your foot stuck between rocks while the current pushes against you. If you end up in the water, keep your feet up, float, and let the current carry you to a safe place to exit.

A flipped kayak can be replaced. Your safety cannot. Stay calm, stay smart, and enjoy your time on the river!

⛈️ River Safety Tip Day #6: Watch the Weather

Weather can change quickly on the New River, especially during the heat of summer. Before opening each day, we monitor weather conditions and forecasts. If severe weather or storms are expected, we may delay opening, close early, or not open at all for the safety of our guests. However conditions can change during the day.

✔️ If you hear thunder, get off the water immediately
✔️ Don’t wait for the rain, lightning can strike miles from a storm
✔️ Give yourself plenty of time to finish your trip before storms arrive

🪢 River Safety Tip Day #5: Avoid Entanglement Hazards

One of the most overlooked dangers on the river is getting tangled in ropes or loose gear if you flip your boat. This actually happened to me last year, and what seemed like a harmless rope hooked from my kayak to my dry bag, quickly became a dangerous situation. When I flipped my boat, it wrapped around my leg and pulled me under water. Luckily, I was wearing my life jacket, which helped keep me afloat, (semi 😂) calm, and allowed me to get free safely.

✔️ Never wrap a rope around your hand, wrist, or leg
✔️ Avoid attaching long tethers to yourself (I’m not a fan of paddle leashes because of this)
✔️ Keep tethers as short as possible

🥾 River Safety Tip Day #4: Wear the Right Footwear

Whether you’re launching, taking out, walking around camp, or stepping into shallow water, the right footwear can help prevent slips, cuts, and injuries.

✔️ Wear water shoes (or old tennis shoes work great too)
✔️ Avoid flip-flops that can easily come off in moving water
✔️ Protect your feet from rocks, sticks, broken glass, fishing hooks, and other hidden hazards

Many people are surprised by how much broken glass, fishing tackle, sharp rocks, and other debris can be found along riverbanks and shallow areas. A good pair of water shoes can save you from an injury and make your day on the river much more enjoyable.
