In 12 days, Yellowstone loses half its crowds

The Teton River holds trout most people never cast to.

81 miles of slow water west of the peaks. The Upper Teton runs shallow and calm, ideal for a lazy morning on the fly—cutthroat rise. Ospreys work the bends. And on the quiet stretches near Driggs, a moose steps out of the willows to drink, close enough to hear the water move.

This is the Idaho side. Uncrowded. Unmanufactured. Real mountains on your right the whole float.

A moose crossed our path on the water

You do not plan the best moments on the Teton River. You drift into them.

The current slows through the meadows near Driggs, a mother moose steps off the bank, and the whole raft goes quiet.

The lower 48’s largest eagle nursery is here

Forty minutes from Driggs, the South Fork of the Snake holds the biggest eagle nesting area in the Lower 48.

Drift the calmer summer flows below Palisades. Watch cottonwoods for white heads against the canyon walls. Cutthroat rolling below, wings overhead, the only sound your paddle.

Base out of Juniper Island in Rigby, sleeps 12 and is minutes from the put-in, with rare mid-August and late-September weekends available.
