Today we took a detour on our way back from Oakland, MD.

Ever wondered where a simple boundary line shaped an entire region's history? Enter the Fairfax Stone.

First planted in 1746, this unassuming marker was used to determine the western limits of Thomas Lord Fairfax’s massive 5-million-acre northern neck land grant. It didn't just mark property—it eventually settled a Supreme Court boundary dispute between West Virginia and Maryland in 1910! ⚖️
Today, the current stone sits at the junction of Tucker and Preston counties in West Virginia, marking the very headwaters of the Potomac River.

It’s a quick, quiet, and deeply historic stop and a short drive from The Pickled Bear.

Fun Fact: A young George Washington actually surveyed this area a few years after the original stone was placed!
