Trail Tuesday 🥾

This is the easiest win on the whole mountain.

Aspen Mirror Lake is 15 acres of still water in a bowl of aspens, about five minutes from the village. The walk in is half a mile on flat ground, and that's the whole hike. Come around the last bend and the lake is right there, holding the trees upside down on its surface.

Go early. Before the wind picks up, the water is mirror-flat and mist lies across it.

There are rainbow trout if you want to fish, and it's calm enough to paddle a board across.

Nobody books us for the night sky. Then it's the only thing they talk about on the way home. 🔭

At 8,900 feet there's less atmosphere between you and everything else. Dixie National Forest sits on every side, there's no town glow for miles, and the nearest neighbor is nobody. Cedar Breaks — a certified International Dark Sky Park — is right up the road.

Two telescopes live here, and they're already set up:

The Vaonis Hestia, which runs off your phone, so anyone in the group can work it
A Celestron StarSense Explorer 150mm tabletop Dobsonian, app-guided

Craters on the moon. Saturn's rings. Jupiter's moons. Star clusters, distant galaxies, and the Milky Way straight overhead.

Up the road at Cedar Breaks there are Saturday star parties through the season — telescope viewing, constellation tours, night sky stories, and special ones for the Perseids in mid-August.

Three things nobody tells you: give your eyes a full twenty minutes to adjust, bring a red light instead of a white one, and check the moon phase rather than the forecast. A clear night with a full moon shows you far less than you'd think.

Best seat in the house is a hot tub at midnight. We don't make the rules.

Trail Tuesday 🥾

Twenty minutes from the deck, there's a hole in the forest floor you can walk straight into.

Mammoth Cave is a lava tube. Molten rock drained out from under a hardened crust and left a tunnel behind, more than 2,200 feet of it. You don't need ropes, a guide or a ticket. You walk in off a forest trail under the ponderosas, and within moments it's completely dark and a lot colder.

It's our favorite answer to a restless afternoon with kids.

Bring a flashlight for each person, because one for the group isn't enough and phone lights drain fast down there. Bring a jacket too.

From roughly October through April, the Forest Service gates the main tube to protect hibernating bats. The other openings stay open.

Everyone knows Brian Head for the snow. We're here for the other half of the year. 🚵

It's 33 miles and about 50 minutes from our deck. A day trip — not a place you have to stay.

What's up there once the snow goes:

The bike park — the Giant Steps quad hauls you and the bike to the basin, then 19 downhill trails back down
The chairlift — ride up without a bike, walk or roll down
Brian Head Peak — 11,307 feet, and 100-mile views in every direction
Disc golf, a climbing wall, a zip line, archery, bungee trampolines, adventure tubing
Hundreds of miles of ATV and backcountry trail

Make a loop of it: Highway 14 west, UT-148 north past the Cedar Breaks rim at 40 minutes, Brian Head at 50, then UT-143 down to Parowan on the Patchwork Parkway.

Then you come back to the quiet. Eighteen people, four hot tubs, a sauna and a cold plunge, and a canyon rim with nobody else on it. Play up there. Stay out here.
