If you practice compassion, whether you believe in a religion or not, you will come to realize the value of compassion for your own peace of mind. The very atmosphere of your own life becomes happier, which promotes good health, perhaps even a longer life. By developing a warm heart, we can also transform others. As we become nicer human beings, our neighbors, friends, parents, spouses, and children experience less anger. They will become more warmhearted, compassionate, and harmonious. You will see the world around you change little by little. Even a small act of compassion grants meaning and purpose to our lives.

If someone gets defensive when you aren't being offensive, their reaction has nothing to do with you. They still feel raw, insecure, stressed, and fearful about the topic you are discussing, so it's best to gently step away from the conversation. It's like approaching dogs at the shelter; their demeanor is a reflection of how they were treated before you, so despite your best intentions, if you approach someone who is scared (even if you approach them with treats), you might get bit because you didn't pull back. People don't (usually) growl at you, but they do show signs when they feel threatened, and getting super defensive is one of those indicators that you have entered a minefield. I don't blame others for their raw wounds (I have my own), so let them be defensive. It has nothing to do with you. Back away. This isn't the time. Let them be. No reason to react to their reaction and escalate matters. Breathe.

It is important to learn to distinguish inner guidance, and having an opinion, from judgment, otherwise we run the risk of not listening to our intuition and not allowing ourselves to form opinions.
