The bluebird chicks are growing up. The parents go back and forth, back and forth, bringing food in a seemingly endless circle. (Little do they realize, less than 200 feet away is a Cooper’s Hawk nest high up in a Douglas fir. When the hawk’s chicks hatch they’ll need 5+ small beds a day to feed to them. Beware little bluebirds.)

Toward the end of the office workday, most days in the summer, I’ll stroll on up to the garden with my laptop and a bottle of Rosé (thanks Dobbes Winery). I’ll sit at the table there and finish up last minute tasks and emails. Liz will be busy planting, fixing irrigation systems, weeding, and now harvesting. It’s peaceful mostly, and yet there’s an awful lot going on. Today a Cooper’s Hawk is hanging around just outside the fence. I think it has its eye on our Bluebird nesting pair. Small birds are the favorite prey of this hawk. All this while Liz brings in the first of the potato crop.
